I don't have a problem with the Jason Terry, Courtney lee or Jeff Green signings whatsoever.
1. By all accounts, these three guys are all really solid teammates who "really wanted" to be here, in Boston, on this team. There is incredible value to me in that because it bodes well for overall team chemistry, which is critical if you want any legit shot at the ring.
2. I see us having a legit two year window at this point, provided Rondo, Pierce and KG stay relatively healthy. What we need is "very solid" depth from guys coming off the bench who can also start when needed. Terry, Lee and Green can all do this - that is something we haven't had since 2008 and it's critical given the ages of KG and Pierce.
3. Jason Terry doesnt' "have" to be in his prime. For the next two years he needs to play about 15-20 minutes a night and be Eddie House / Vinnie Johnson. - I think he's more than capable of doing that.
4. Courtney Lee doesn't have to be Ray Allen - he just needs to play great defense, run like hell with Rondo and hit his shots when he's open.
5. Jeff Green just needs to play valuable minutes behind Pierce, help bring Pierce's minutes down for the next two years. That is worth $9 million per year because it means you have a very good shot at keeping Pierce incredibly fresh all season and for the playoffs when it matters most. I can live with Jeff Green's $9 million for year three as a starter at the SF position and he's trade bait as an expiring in year four if he doesn't pan out. Not a big deal. Additionally, he can play some small ball at the four when asked to.
** Give Jeff Green a year of defensive work with Doc and KG and a full year of running on the break with Rondo and get back to me about how you feel about his $9 mil per year.
Overall - I see the Lee, Terry and Green signings as championship moves. I think Doc and Danny - rightfully so - think that if this team remains healthy, they have a legitimate title shots this year and next - that's all that matters.
And personally, I think we crush Miami with this team - we are the favortie out of the east IMHO.
You add, Jason Collins, Chris Wilcox, Sullinger, Jeff Green, Courtney Lee, Jason Terry and Avery Bradley to a team that was one game away from the finals last year?...
Time will tell but if we gel and stay healthy, this could be one of the most dominant Celtics teams in the Pierce / KG / Rondo era. That would put it up there with the most dominant Celtic teams ever.
I have very high hopes for this season.
And I also think Jeff Green is an eventual 18 and 7 starting small forward / 3rd or 4th option on a rebuilt Celtics team lead by Rondo in 3-4 years from now. He can play that role. Rondo, another max guy or two and then Green as your pecking order in a starting five.
Kind of like Rondo, KG, Pierce and then Green on this team...
