Do the Cs still have room to use BE this offseason? It looks unlikely based on their existing deals and the tax level, noted here:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1254347-nba-sets-salary-cap-and-luxury-tax-level-for-2012-2013-season

and the info laid out here:

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4696545/roster-reset-leaving-las-vegas

However, i so, interested to hear if folks think we should use this now -- and on who -- or wait and hold onto it?

One idea: Kenyon Martin. I'd like to see Chris Andersen join, but if not I'd like to see another versatile defender on the team. Feel like K-Mart would fit in nicely... block shots, board, dunk, talk junk, etc.

I believe we still have it, and are hanging on to it for a rainy day... unless we use it on Pietrus (unlikely with Lee coming over and Joseph likely making the team).

I would love Kenyon Martin in a basketball sense. He's old, but he still gives quality minutes off the bench in terms of scoring and rebounding. If Sully doesn't pan out or someone goes down to injury, he's a great option.

My only worry is his attitude. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he have a history of being destructive to a locker room environment?

i have a hard time imagining him being a locker room issue considering his age, competitiveness, and the existing veterans on the team, but i can't say i really know much about it....

Question about the BAE:  If we don't use it this offseason (and still have the space for it), can we hang onto it to outbid other teams for buyout guys midseason?  If so, I'm ok with keeping it vacant for now.

I'd be interested in this.  He's slipped a bit and is a bit undersized, but because of his shot blocking ability, I'd actually be OK playing him at the 5 spot next to someone with bulk like Sullinger.

Thanks.  Might be better to hang onto it then - we'll know more about our strengths/weaknesses and any injuries later on.  It'd also allow us a longer look at some of our fringe young guys (Joseph + XMas), and we could decide which one's worth cutting when a vet becomes available.

K-Mart would be a solid pickup if he'd take it, though.

Yes, not only can we use it at any point in the season, provided we have room under the apron, but it can be used in full or pro-rated.  Vet min contracts can only be pro-rated I believe.  Definitely gives a leg up on other contenders when bidding for waived players.

Edit: Nevermind, the BAE also begins to pro-rate downward starting on Jan 10.  Still, it's more than the vet min.

I agree.  I like the idea of K-Mart, but the plan seems to be to take a look at the young guys on non-guaranteed deals, and then reassess midseason.

It makes sense.  As much as I'd prefer that they bring back Dooling, for all we know the guard core is completely healthy all season and we get hammered with the injury bug in the frontcourt.

So it makes sense to maintain flexibility.

I wouldn't be adverse to using the BAE on him.  Would prefer to use it on a decent role player we'd want for 2 years.  not sure I'd want him next year but it depends how the season goes.

I think my best case scenario would be to resign Dooling at vet min, hang onto Xmas and Joseph to fill out the roster, then wait for a buyout guy, outbid other teams with the BAE, and cut the lesser of Xmas/Joseph.

Rondo/Dooling
Lee/Jet/XMas (AB injured)
Pierce/Green/Joseph
KG/Bass
Sullinger/Wilcox/Collins/Melo

Positions and depth are fluid but that's a roster I can roll with, especially with the BAE still in our back pocket.

In fact, the reason we haven't heard much about Dooling may be because we're offering the minimum and he's pushing for the BAE.  Would seem to make sense.

I think this is well put. TP. I'd be tempted by a guy like Martin, but the smarter move would probably be to wait it out. With that said, i'm torn between Dooling (key relationship with Rondo) and Pietrus (nice length at the 2/3 for defensie purposes) -- I think i'd rather have the latter.

What if we are over the luxury tax line, but below the apron?  Can we still use it?  Or is it only teams who are under the actual tax line who can use it?

I want Pietrus back as well he is THAT guy to spell Paul when going up against a Carmelo and LeBron James both of which we are to most likely see. I sure as hell don't want to see Bass on James again, I know we have Green but he isn't the greatest defender.

I would love to have Kenyon Martin here. I badly want another above average defensive big man to give KG some help defensively.

I have no idea where the minutes are going to come from though.
