I think there is a solid chance we could get him if he isn't traded before the season starts. There is incentive for the Cavs to get rid of him. The Cavs are in full re-build mode with two promising young big men (Tristan Thompson & Tyler Zeller) who play Varejao's positions and he is now their most expensive contract ($27 over 3 years with a team option on the last one.) He would be a match made in heaven too for the C's and I hope he is one of Danny's main targets when mid season rolls around and we have more flexibility in trades.
I mean you couldn't ask for a better fit. He's 6"11. He can play Power Forward or Center. He plays physical, tough defense and hustles with an unrelenting motor, still in his prime (29 years old), and most importantly
he was 3rd in the entire league in rebounding rate last season (averaged 11.5 rpg), something we desperately need help with. He does have some weaknesses, he's not a very good shot blocker, free throw shooter, or offensive player in general and he's not incredibly athletic. But I would love his toughness, defense and rebounding on this team either way.
Rumors before the draft were that the Cavs dangled him looking for another pick in the lottery but their demands were apparently too high. If their expectations come back down to earth I'd love the C's to explore something mid-season centered around Bass who's contract matches in a trade. For the Cavs Bass is younger, more athletic, much more polished offensive player, and he has a much more cost controlled contract that runs over the same period as Varejao's (but would ultimately save them $7.5 mil.)
Plus this picture of him mocking Lebron's tattoo always made me laugh:
