No, Darko isn't very good. Actually, he's very sub-par. Good thing all we need is a decent depth option. He'll give us a few minutes per game at C during the regular season just to keep KG et al as fresh as possible for the playoffs. With the cast of character's the Celts have tried to trot out at C over the past decade, you have to admit that Darko is at least worth looking over. I'm not saying that I want us to rush out and sign him, but it certainly deserves to be given some thought.
Using the BAE on Steimsma is actually a major risk. I will give three good reasons why I wouldn't do this:
1) Health- was last year a streak of bad luck or an indication that he is going to be dealing with nagging injuries for his whole career?
2) Defense- people love to call Steamer a "great" defender but the fact of the matter is that his pick-and-roll defense was not just sub-par but god awful. Until he significantly improves that aspect of his defense he will get attacked by any opposing head coach worth his salt.
3) Value- why use the BAE on a 3rd string center who might not pan out when you can get another 3rd string center for the vet min (assuming, of course, that we can find a C for the vet min)? Why use the BAE on a 3rd string-er when we still don't have a starting SG to start the season? (assuming we don't work out a sign/trade)
Maybe Steamer just needed some time to figure out how to defend the pick-and-roll in the NBA. Maybe he will be 100% healthy all year next year. I just don't know. I don't think it's worth the BAE to find out.
I think this team could use another big body but right now I think out priority should be shoring up our guard rotation. We already have big bodies- they are just young and inexperienced bodies. Sometimes you just have to roll the dice with what you've got- we might be stuck with the frontcourt we have currently with Bass-KG-Wilcox-Sully as the main contributors. It doesn't leave any wiggle room in case of injuries but really we don't have many options here.
