Question:  Say Jerry Sandusky was not a child molester but a cat burglar.  Everything else is the same, do people still feel the same way about potential penalties?

Molesting a child is a heckuva lot more heinous and damaging than burglary.  Theres not even a comparison.

Yeah, they are not even in the same league.  Honestly, I wonder if it would even be treated as harshly if Sandusky was a serial killer.  In the rankings of criminals in our society, child molesters are at the very bottom...only above those who molest children and then kill them afterwards.

As much as I feel Penn St. needs to get punished via legal system or however for this I really don't want the NCAA taking more power.

This is the organization that will spend a few weeks investigating sandwiches, while boosters host yacht parties for recruits and the like unnoticed.

On a similar note I do feel its strange that this is all happening without the NCAA conducting its own investigation

This I agree with.  I really think it should be the Pennsylvania legislature (this is a state school, right), lowering the hammer.  This isn't a sports issue, this is about the administration.  And the administration needs to be handled by those who pay their salaries.

Exactly this is pretty much extradjudical punishment for PR purposes.

I'm not a fan of the process even if I don't find the result questionable.

Yeah agreed, either the legislature or the courts would be better.

See thats where I disagree with people.  Football became more important to the school than the safety and well being of children.  Yes the administration was the ones that covered it up, but the reason was so they did not tarnish the reputation of the football team and head coach.

If this were the psychology department would the teacher have been covered up for or would they have turned them in?

Oh, this is going to be a straight out dog and pony show by the NCAA. Little doubt.

I think a mob with torches would probably get the job done more quickly and efficiently.

Perhaps we should have a poll.

A) NCAA
B) Courts
C) State legislature
D) Mob with torches

Scary enough Rondo given the nature of how we deal with sexual assault I wouldn't be shocked if they covered it up in other departments. There are reasons why most victims don't report this sort of crime, how society drags them through the dirt is one of the biggest.

I do agree that the football program was allowed far too much independence, power, and prestige. No way should they be able to drive out the administrator of student conduct because she dared actually punish members of the football team.

My point is, it should be the legislature, who ultimately are responsible for the school (at least I am assuming it is similar to Umass), so they are the ones who should be stepping in.

I am not saying anything should be let go, I am just saying the punishment should be coming from within (and it should be just as harsh, if not moreso).

If the NCAA gives their football program the death penalty, it doesn't necessarily clean up the culture within the administration at the school.  They need the hammer to come down from a stronger entity with a further reaching scope, to really dig out the problems.

No mention of scholarship reductions?

4 year bowl ban is pretty significant. Obviously, the $60 million in fines is too.

Paterno just got knocked down the alltime win list.

Ya pretty surprised here, the fines i don't think are all that meaningful in the long run for a school with such a big endowment, the wins thing is just kinda for show.

The bowl ban is the most significant.

I'm guess there will be some, but they didn't want to go into somewhat boring details like how they amortize those.
