If they are allowed to play football next year it will be a total sham

Why?  Anybody even remotely involved in this has been removed.  Why penalize the players?  New coaches? Students? etc...By eliminating the program?  How does that make anything better?  Or send a message?

In completely cleaning house...(Don't underestimate the symbolism of the statue removal in all this) Particularly against the will of the most affluent of the alumni..The university has gutted the program to the point that it will take years to rebuild without sanctions.  In doing what they've done already, they've removed themselves completely from the Penn State football traditions and the program itself.  Recruiting will be devastated based just on that.  Add the circumstances that none of the people currently there had any involvement with...It'll take an amazing coaching staff to recruit even remotely competitively in one of the most competitive conferences in the NCAA.

In some ways, what they've already done themselves may be worst than the death penalty.  But it was the only thing they could do to try to start anew.

This is probably one of those situations where it's probably better to punish a bunch of innocent people than let some guilty ones go free. The team had like 4 losing seasons in a row in the early 2000s. PSU passion can totally survive 5 years easily and other teams will do better giving their fans a chance at some fun. I personally think it would be cool to see maybe Indiana U play some great football for once. Probably won't happen, but you know what I mean

Yeah, I can see the value in that. Kind of a 'scorched earth' policy. Certainly does send a lesson.

But I think that gets done by taking PSU off the football map, games and all, for a full year, with bowl penalties after.

I just read on Yahoo! that they'll be getting "multiple bowl bans and crippling scholarship losses".

Well. at least they still have the program. This school suffered enough from evil people, to take away the football from the innocent kids who and the innocent people who somehow relies on it would be way way devastating.

They didn't have this hanging over their head during those 4 losing seasons...They had a program, a legendary coach, the support of the university, the alumni, the NCAA,  and Penn State tradition to fall back on.

What the university has done is essentially erased all of it to the point where what's left will be unrecognizable.  The football program is essentially an island on their own campus.  That's before the NCAA does what will appear to be a dog and pony show on steroids tomorrow...

No.  The reason the NCAA should not give Penn State the death penalty is because, believe it or not, Penn State may not have violated NCAA rules.

Penn State - or more accurately, its former head coach, AD, and president - are guilty of crimes.  We have a system set up to deal with that, and as we found out with Sandusky, that system works just fine.

The NCAA should come down hard on Penn State for any violations of its rules.  I haven't heard anything that justifies the supposed "death penalty," but I am sure there is enough for them to lose scholarships and be banned from bowl games for a while.

SMU got the death penalty because it violated the NCAA's rules over and over and over again, in face of continuous warnings from the NCAA.
