Why would New Jersey want to invest serious funds in Kris Humphries? I don't get it.

It puts him in the way of their top five pick last season + Hump isn't a particularly good fit alongside Varejao. I don't see where the value is here for Cleveland.

Humphries salary is necessary to make the D12 trade work.  However, Orlando has no interest in him.  So, Cleveland is volunteering to take on that salary in return for a draft pick.

The story makes it sound like Cleveland would be giving up a pick, but that makes no sense; they could just sign him outright, I believe, without giving up anything.  It makes a lot more sense, though, if Cleveland is getting a pick to take on a signed-and-traded Humphries (probably on a one year deal, plus two non-guaranteed seasons), especially since Cleveland needs to meet the salary cap floor.

Is Hump a UFA or RFA?  Does it matter?  Doesn't he have to agree to go to Cleveland?  Why would he do that?

Isn't there a rule that you cannot trade away first round picks in consecutive years and you're also not allowed to trade away any picks further than 4 or 5 years in the future?

Because of this, I believe the most of your own first draft picks you're allowed to trade away is 2 or 3.

Humphries is unrestricted.  He'd agree only if the market for his services was pretty non-existent, and this was his biggest chance at a payday.  He had to take a one year deal last year, as well.

OK, yeah I had a feeling they must have had another teams's draft pick to use.

Trading away all these picks (esp their 2019 first round pick) would be a potentially very damaging move for the long term future of their franchise.  Trading away so many draft picks for "win now" talent puts franchises in a terrible position once that "win now" window closes.  Joe Johnson (31), Deron Williams (28), and Dwight Howard (26) will all be 38, 35, and 33 years old respectively in the year 2019 and likely to be a pretty bad team.  With no cap space to get good free agents in between now and then and very few first round draft picks in that time either.  They also have no second round draft picks from '13 - '15.  But putting together a title contender like this makes it seem well worth the risk.  I just hope they are ready for a long rebuilding phase after that.

The Spurs and Celtics have done a great job over the past 5 years of balancing reloading while not mortgaging all their future assets.  The Lakers are soon-to-be doomed as well after trading those two picks for Nash and having very few future pieces on board right now.
