  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.

Ray left because he felt disrespected by the Celtics.

He was the one that offered the lowest contract amount two times (10 million 2 years ago and 5-6 this time, that is less than Bass). He was the one that was benched for Bradley.

Rightfully or not. After all, he only received $3 million from the Heat, the C's dont have to pay him more than market.
He wasnt feeling the love so he left.

There isnt one reason. Its not Rondo, its a culmination many things that led him to feel that he was not receiving the respect he felt he deserved.

Ciao - Ray.

I'm surprised Ray 'was torn' over the decision to leave.
We dangled him as trade bait multiple times and told him that he was traded to Memphis for OJ Mayo and he thought he was going.

Everyone is so green eyed in the discussion.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Ego does strange things to men.
Name one Celtic who wasn't dangled in trade bait multiple times since Danny has been running things.
Feeling the love? What did he want?  To throw out the game ball at Fenway?  Tickets to Springsteen?  His picture taken with the Red Auerbach Statue in Quincy Market?
Ray left because he's a merc.  He wants to chase rings with the dancing trio of Lebron, Wade and Bosh.  Ray has forever changed his own legacy.  Hope he goes in the HOF in a Heat uniform, because Boston doesn't claim him.

And the idea that he is worth anything near what KG (or Pierce) is worth is laughable.

Then somehow it was insulting that Rondo got a longer contract?  And that Bradley started?  Talk about green-eyed!

i think his decision was based on 5 years of arguing with Rondo.  Ray's decision will make for a more harmonious locker room.  Rondo will jump to another level of play this year without Ray constantly arguing and criticizing him.  Jst look at Rondo's improved play since Ray was demoted to reserve.

I really really hope time doesn't heal the wounds and we eventually retire his number.

No way rays number gets hung up. It would be a complete disrespect to all of the real celtics that have their number hung up. Ray isn't a real celtic.

What did he want? Probably to not be traded to Memphis in the middle of the season as a 37 year old veteran. No one has been as legitimately on the trade block as Ray. We've heard one or two rumors about Pierce and KG in the past five years, but Ray's been in the firing line as the one to go multiple times- Doc even admitted he told Ray he was gone to Memphis.
I guess he wanted more trust from a team that claims to 'need him so much'.
You hope he goes into the hall as a Heat member, and
I hope most of our emotions temper down after the dust has settled and look at what he's done for us. He gave us 5 fantastic, memorable and legendary years and they aren't just vanishing because we're upset for 5 minutes that he chose to finish on a different path.

This is already true for me. I have good memories of his time here in Boston, and they can be summoned forth by starting: "Remember when we didn't know that Ray Allen was a scumbag"? It was fun watching Game 1 of the 2008 Finals again last night, for example.

People calling Ray a scumbag and all sorts of other insults really need to grow up.

I understand the disappointment and irritation over what has happened. I am as upset as anyone that Ray decided to leave us, especially for a time like the Heat.

But, at the end of the day, he gave us 5 [dang]ed good years and title number 17. He broke the all-time 3 point record as a Celtic. He set the most 3s in a NBA Finals game as a Celtic. I believe his career points in a game record was also in green.

Free agency and trades are part of the game. I understand your irritation, but there is no reason to take it to a personal level. Don't forget what Ray DID give us. He was always a consummate professional. Sucks that he is gone, but that is his prerogative. Nobody here has ANY idea what was going on in the locker-room, in Ray's head, or between him and his family, so nobody here has any right to pretend they knew what was going on and insult him over it.

It sucks. But this Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. happens. Grow up.

Ray is delusional if he thinks he's anywhere near as important to the team as KG is, so of course he wouldn't be the priority. Miami recruited him hard because it was him versus some other $3M a year guy, and he was the best for that spot. So the comparison between the recruitment by both teams is unfair.

I lose more respect for him every day, maybe he wasn't a good fit for the Celtics culture afterall.

Ray was clearly voicing his complaints to beat writers not just in this off-season, but during the season as well.  So he wanted people to know what was in his head--and to some degree we do.

I don't like using the term "prideful" when discussing Ray's reasons for leaving Boston.  You could easily argue that pride is the very same reason that Pierce would never bolt to Miami.  All of these Hall of Fame players are prideful in different ways.  The word pride doesn't really highlight the specific reasons that Ray left.

Pierce has admitted to being tempted to push a trade, ideally to LA, in the years when the C's were bad.

The deal between the players and the teams is this: the teams play good players tens of millions of dollars a year--not the other way around.  And for that extremely high rate of pay, it is usually written into their contracts that they can be traded in an effort to maximize the team's competitiveness.

That's the deal.  Both the teams and the union agree to that because they recognize that it makes the league more entertaining--and thus generates the income that makes those extremely high salaries possible.
