I too hope it's not a giant contract.

On the bright side we've accumulated some goodwill with Falk.

I'm gonna Amare an extinguisher if Green got 4 years $40 million.

Does Wyc cut a check to all Celtics fans for the difference if Green signs for less?  If not, I don't get all the outrage.

He'll have to suck pretty bad for a $10 million a year contract to be unmovable.  That's chump change in today's NBA.

His condition combined with his last contract makes this proposed deal ludicrous. I take vested interest in how Celtics spend because we are essentially dealing with a hard cap going forward. From what I understand, if we stay under the LT the big MLE will be available to us next year too. That's a major tool that can help feed this team more talent if not hindered by an above market contract like the one being suggested.

I didn't know about that rule, but we aren't staying under the luxury tax even if we offer him $7 million a year.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

That's about the only thing I worry about. But I'm pretty sure that with Green's 9 million deal, we'd still be under that apron now that Ray is gone.

If my calculations are near enough, with the inclusion of Green and Terry, we'd be at around $64.5 million this year (playing it a bit loosely). That's 9.5 million to go to reach this year's estimated apron (maybe it'd be more). We'd have 10 players under contract and 5 to go, with the BAE still at hand.

So options left would be Moore which adds .7 million. Joseph, who adds .5 (I'm not sure if his contract is already guaranteed).

The last 3 are open game to vet minimum guys and the BAE, we'd still be quite under the apron for this year alone, and probably next year.

We'd have to see if DA does any trades, particularly ones that include S&T.

But as it stands, we still got plenty room to maneuver even if we give Green that "atrocious" 9-10 per year contract.

TP for the breakdown, but does your math include increases in the salaries of our signed guys? Also, I believe we need to be below the LT by an amount that covers the full MLE to use it. This will end up being too close for comfort if $74 million is the LT mark.

Can Pierce opt out of that final year which is only partially promised? It would nice to rip that last year up and get him at 2 years $12 million to lower that number even further.

Not to speak for others, but I'd bet that his numbers use 2012-2013 salaries for our players.

The calculations are only for this year, but as shown our core guys keep us at a decent level with respect to the apron. It includes the current and speculated salaries for this year. I think it's a bit inevitable that at some point we'll be too close to the apron, but I think we have a good chance of being in good shape for next year too.

Concerning Pierce, his salary actually goes down next year.

But all that said, I don't think it makes much sense to forgo Green this year, just to have a chance at an MLE contract next year. If keeping Green here means an extra 2-4 a year more than most here are comfortable with, I'd keep Green.

Also, keep in mind that if we use the BAE this year, we don't have it next year.

why wouldnt jeff greens contract be:

1st year: 7 mill
2nd year: 9 mill
3rd year: 11 mill
4th year: 13 mill

= 40 million

with a 4th year team option or SOMETHING like that? or a team option for the final two years?  I would think the first year would be 7 million because thats what bass got this week, and he basically has the same averages.

also, i think jeff is worth 7 mill at the most, so i dont know what danny is thinking in offering him a 40 mill contract over 4 years...

but if there was a team option for the final two years - that would be a pretty good contract.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Joseph is a second round pick, thus he has no contract guarantees.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

There really isn't much of a difference between SGs and SFs.  SFs are bigger but the purported differences like SGs always being quicker or handling the ball better or shooting better are just nonsense.  Just take the Atlantic Conference.  Does it make a difference if Pierce guards Joe Johnson or Gerald Wallace? Iguodala or Turner?  Derozan or whoever Toronto has at SF? Carmelo or Landry Fields (last yr anyway)/Shumpert?  No.  Going on: Turkoglu or Richardson? Gerald Henderson or Kidd-Gilchrist?  And so on. Even against Miami, Pierce has defended Wade well.

“We’ve reached agreement in principal for him to return,” Falk said according to the Globe’s Gary Washburn. “You see a situation like Jeff’s where there’s a tremendous level of goodwill that been built up over the last year and half. I’ve got a long memory. I remember people who treat me well and I remember people who don’t.”

Nothing completely set in stone.

Love the last part. Like I said, this is fantastic for us. I believe Falk is a high profile agent too.

For what the numbers look like cap wise, just look back at my previous numbers.

Read the thread folks.  Green at 9m is an over-pay but perfectly with-in the apron, especially without Ray.  We're fine.

We still w ould take on 5m in additional salary, and be under the apron.  Or possibly save it for a full mle again next year.  Although that would be difficult.

Yeah Falk is pretty high profile.  He's mostly known for being Michael Jordan's agent.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Falk#Partial_client_list
