This kind of contract would tie us up like Joe Johnson's contract tied up the Hawks until this offseason. Overpaying a so-so player by a ridiculous margin.

That is the overstatement of the century

This (if by some chance it was true) is at the level of the contracts Detroit gave out to Charlie V and Ben Gordon.

How different is Jeff Green from Marvin Williams? Marvin makes $8 million per year and is considered overpaid. I think Green's value is somewhere between Beasley and Marvin. 7-8 per year.

I'm starting to buy into the idea that this amount is a rumor generated by Miami, or the agent.

and danny has to get PP's minutes down this season. he came in broken down and left the playoff broken down...

of the big three...PP looks to be in the worst shape...green would save PP

I think there are much cheaper options to keep Pietrus' minutes down. The numbers we're talking about are star, starter type of money.

who? boston has tried the scrub route for years...the days of daniels and trash like that need to end. i am tired of scrap heap guys...green is 25 and could be a good bridge to the future

I agree the money needs to be down for him...but green seems to be a guy they are counting on

i think the money is above bass and less than 8 million...4 for 28 or 4 for 32

That's what I think.

Thank you! Look how stagnant that team has been ever since those contracts were handed out.

I'm not too worried about the amount of money we're giving Green beyond this year. We're already tied up to 3 years with most of our core, and after this year we won't be playing with the full mid-level again for some time, so other than the owners paying more taxes, I really don't care a bit about this.

Green is young, and by the time the contract may become an issue (3 years from now), it will be a contract which is easily tradeable.

It's a lot, but what can we do? We're kind of stuck, if we don't sign him, hoping to add pieces to our team through free agency (with the MLE's) and the draft until the contracts of KG, Terry, Bass, etc. expire. So it might be a calculated risk of sorts. Perhaps that 4th year is a team option and then it can coincide with the other contracts given out this summer.

When exactly did Ben Gordon become Joe Johnsom??

No wonder Falk keeps saying that this is going to get done.  If Danny is offering this level of contract, no other team is going to touch that.

Yup if indeed this is the cost, I would walk away. The 4th year at that amount is killer. I don't mind over paying a bit for 3 years, as the C's aren't going to be seeing cap room again until 2015, maybe a touch in 2014.

i would have to think it would be a heavily incentive based contract

Still a lot of misconceptions about how good Green is.

He was played out of position most of the time in OKC. He would have been a starter on 50% of teams in the NBA, but had a future Hall of Famer in Durant ahead of him at the 3.

If Paul Pierce was played mostly at the PF position for the first 5 years of his career, we probably would have thought he stunk too.

Green came to Boston last year in the worst of circumstances: right before a play-off run, with teammates who were reminded of their Perk-traumatic-stress-disorder every time they looked at him. Hard to get comfortable in that environment.

Now he knows everybody, and has a much greater comfort level with the team and his role on it.

Locking this guy up at $40 mil/4 years isn't a big stretch, and it pretty much assures the Celtics of a smooth transition during Pierce's decline and beyond.

Nothing but sunshine for the foreseeable future in Celticland.

He isn't.  Joe Johnson was actually one of the best players on a playoff team (that seemed to always take the Celtics to game 7)

But Detroit overpayed him and Charlie V and ended up stuck in cap issues with a terrible team.
