Am I the only one not really happy with this?  Bass is a pretty good offensive player but his lack of defense KILLED us in the Miami series and in many situations throughout the playoffs.

You mean his "lack of defense" when he was asked to guard Lebron on the perimeter?  That's hardly fair in my opinion.

Overall, Bass' defense was top-notch.  Statistically, he measured out in the elite range.  He turned out to be a really good fit in our system, which was something that I never expected.

The eye test tells me otherwise, Roy.  He made a lot of mental errors on D.  I know LBJ is not an easy guy to stay in front of - but every single time down the floor he got past Bass without even being touched.  It really was bad...
You do know hand checks aren't legal anymore right?

  • GOT IT!!!
Blakely says the Bass deal is 3 years, about 20 million.

So essentially what Baby got. That's not bad considering the way players are getting overpaid right now.
One year less than baby, that's important.

Agreed.

Financially must signal that Ray must be gone...

Why, we had the Ray offer out there while we were pursuing Bass and Terry.  All of this has been explained.

The real concern now should be Jeff Green.  If he gets a big offer we cannot beat it and still use the MLE on Terry, I think.

I think we have a Green deal essentially in place.  We've also got some wiggle room under the $74 million hard cap right now.

Smells like Before July 11 Bass or Ray or both will be a celtic and then not one.

Watch the 4th quarter of game 7 of that Miami series.  Bass let Lebron get past him EVERY time down the court.  I was screaming at my TV that whole quarter to get this guy off the court - he is a liability.
Well who didn't LeBron get by in the playoffs this year? Besides Bass is a true PF, the fact that he handled LBJ as well as he did was impressive.

Bass did well in our defensive system next to KG, glad he's back. After all what other options would you replace him with?

I was waiting for someone to say exactly this.  Really, Faf - i could have guarded LBJ better in that 4th quarter.  He got waaaay too close to him every time down the floor which allowed him to drive past him and get a layup or dish to an open man because he needed so much help.  Paul should have been guarding him in the 4th quarter of a game 7 anyway, but Bass was seriously pitiful in that quarter.  It wasn't physical - it was mental.  Give him space and make him pass or take an outside shot, right?
Paul was doing even worse on LBJ that series, which was perhaps the bigger problem.

Bass did get driven by, but he wasn't exactly crowding LBJ. LBJ still had room to pull up and shoot if he wanted, instead he just drove.

I wouldn't say Pierce was worse. I'd say that LeBron was just making shot after shots, even well contested shots.

I thought once they had Bass on Lebron the defense played better. But that's why they need Green too - so they can play Green at PF if Miami goes small. Lebron hit that super deep three after some great D by Bass, and in game 6 Lebron was just a joke of on the money.

So team depth chart is looking like:

KG
Bass / Sully
Pierce / Green
AB /
Rondo / Terry

Would be real nice to add Ray and Camby to that.

lol.

And again, did he do worse than Game 6?  We had no answers for LeBron and no one else did either.

If that's what you're going to be critical of Bass for really, give it a rest.

Somewhat, sure, but Ainge said Sullinger will be playing C so expect to see that.

Regardless of what Bass did or didn't do defensively against the league MVP, this is a great signing.

Essentially the same deal for our starting PF that Baby got with Orlando, except 1 less year.

Bass has his weaknesses, but he was one of the few good big men available and was being persued by a handful of other teams.

If we can get Ray back this will have been a very successful offseason for DA.

I'd agree with this.  It sure seemed that a pretty high percentage of the time when there was a team defensive breakdown, it was Bass missing a rotation.  We've certainly seen worse defenders in Boston, but any metric that grades Bass as "elite" is pretty suspect, IMO.

OK, that's what I hoped but because we hadn't heard anything I was skeptical.

So now, excluding Allen and the Stiemer Q.O., it's basically the BAE and vet mins, correct?

I think his lateral mobility was worse when it game to staying in front of him. Pierce's lateral quickness on D was bad from the knee injury onwards really.

Plus LeBron had some success against PP in the post, less so against Bass.

That's my point.  Because of LeBron's versaility you either put a guy on him that he can't post up and risk being blown past or you put a guy quick enough but who will get muscled.

We all saw Harden get abused on the post up by LeBron in the Finals.
