Really think Ray helps this Celtics team tremendously but if he wants to go to Miami, that's cool. let's also make sure he gets paid too.

We can sign and trade him to Miami for a little over $5million a year and they can send us Udonis Haslem in return. Then Miami still has their mini mid level to find a replacement for Haslem.

Meanwhile, our starting PF problems are solved, Bass can resign as well as Stiemsma and Pietrus and the team looks like this:

Rondo/Terry/Moore
Bradley/Pietrus
Pierce/Green/Joseph
Haslem/Bass/Sullinger/Johnson
KG/Stiemsma/Melo

That team will contend for a title.

I don't think Miami will give us any useful pieces from their current roster in a sign and trade.

At best they could use their mini-mle to sign for a guy to trade for Allen signed to a bigger deal.
I never said it was feasible, just that if Ray wants Miami and the money we propose it. What's the worse Pat Riley can say? No. Oh well. Heck I might even take Joel Anthony and a second round pick. Its better than nothing and makes the Heat a bit weaker up front.

Say Ray Allen signs with the Heat. This clears his cap hold with the Celtics and we have more space to sign other free agents, correct?

Yup.  What is interesting is that I believe, if Ray, Green, and Bass walk, then the C's could be looking at over $10 million in cap space to use, as well as the space exception.

I think that is about plan G, because they won't be able to replace the amount of talent they are losing with that cap space.  But it would certainly make things interesting.
Space exception?

Yeah, its a new exception for teams under the cap.  If they are under the cap, they can spend up to it, and then also get a $2.5 million exception to use for another player.

In this scenario, of course, they would be signing Terry with their cap space, and not the MLE.

Reading multiple conflicting reports right now. Dwyane Wade and LeBron are tweeting how tomorrow is going to be a "big day" for Heat Nation (and have been BOTH aggressively pursing Ray)..... Also according to "sources" (via Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld), Ray Allen prefers the heat. However others are saying with the Clips cancelling their meeting, the Celtics have a better chance (because of the better offer).

I will say that throughout this whole experience, I believed Ray would come back given the Celtics are offering him more money, a potential no-trade clause, and he is so familiar with the team's schemes. I always hear about how Ray Allen is a true professional and that makes me think he shouldn't take the near-trade so personally. Given all of the above, why on earth wouldn't he return to Boston? In the past, he always made it seem like finances were one of his top priorities. With that taken care of in Boston's offer, everything else should be gravy....

I love be some Felger, just because he doesn't deny he is a BS artist.  He embraces the fact that he knows nothing about basketball.  Tanguay on the other hand is the most obnoxiously arrogant "journalist" this side of Butch Stearns, and either refuses to admit that he has no idea what he is talking about, or is just too stupid to see it.

I guess he's trying to make his previous tweet make sense...

Quote
Gary Tanguay:  Clips took Crawford and Billups over Ray? Makes no sense. Chris Paul recruiting Ray. I think Ray told clips no and meeting was cancelled  3 minutes ago

Green isn't walking.

I think the deal that makes sense is Ray for Chalmers.  The Heat have Cole to take over for Chalmers, and could then use the mini-MLE to sign a cheaper replacement.

And the C's could potentially send Chalmers to a third team if they wanted.

I think the Heat would rather pass on Ray and use the MLE money on a big man FA than acquire Ray in a deal that loses them a player/asset (on an already thin roster) and simultaneously helps their biggest in-conference threat.

Chalmers is a scrub, but he's a scrub with cajones.  He's shown that he can hit a big shot, but it kind of sucks when he's one of your five best players and out there in crunch time.  He'd be an improvement over Dooling, though.

I could handle Chalmers for Ray. Chalmers showed a lot in the last two rounds of the playoffs and if not for some of his big quarters, halves and games, Miami would have been in a lot of trouble. Our backcourt would be small but they would be tough, talented and have a set, that is for sure.

I'm not a big Chalmers fan. The kid is a punk. And we already have enough attitude in the backcourt with Rondo.
