I'll counter by keeping Melo and the future 1st and instead sending Atl future 2nd. When you consider what Atlanta received for Johnson, receiving Bass, Bradley, and a 2nd, for what will be a disgruntled Smith, will look like they hit the jackpot.
Well, the deal ATL is making to send out Johnson is probably the best they could do. Nobody is going to give up any talent for an albatross contract like Johnson has. Honestly, this deal is fairly decent for ATL, just by getting out from underneath the contract.
Unless Smith demands a trade to a specific team, ATL still has some leverage though with Smith. He only has one more year and then his contract is off the books next year. They'd be better to just let him expire than trade for bad contracts.
Now, I'm not saying Bass at around $7-8mil would be horrendous, but ATL could surely get better talent for that money if they are going to take that amount of money back.
