Its the classic illustration of the type of question that assumes a fact without evidence. ie A classic trick question, now I don't think Rome structured his question that way but Stern clearly viewed it as an unfair question to ask him.

Jim Rome should offer to allow cameras in his house for a year in exchange for Stern opening up the lottery to the public. Stern won't take it.

You're implying that having a Jim Rome reality show would entice someone to do something?

You and I have very different amounts of desire to see Jim Rome on camera.

Stern should stop beating his fans with fixed lotteries and manipulated games.

That's how I saw it too. I think a lot of people though around familiar with what the question actually implies.

To those who don't know, its a known 'trick question' technique like Fafnir said, where you have to assume something, whether true or not, to answer the question as a whole, in this example, Rome would have to assume he had 'beat his wife' just to answer the question at all.

Stern felt that Rome was implying that his question was a legitimate one, while Stern felt it was as outlandish as the example he used. I don't think Rome framed it in the classic context, but really asking a commissioner of a professional sport whether or not a major element of keeping their  league's integrity intact was 'fixed' is a pretty offensive question to even be asked with a straight face.

"loaded question", that's what I was looking for.

First, it wasn't a cheap thrill question. Every one was saying it 2 minutes after it happened. Heck I said to my wife after the 4th pick."you watch NO will get the 1st pick because they just sold the team".

So its up to guys like Rome to ask it, since Stern doesn't really care to hear what the fans are saying, and asking.

And to pull the wife beating comment seemed a little over the top for some one that didn't cheat the lottery.

Sterns argument that the price of the team was already set before the lottery doesn't hold water, since that could have been part of the deal to get some one to buy poor team. It kinda looks more obvious that way.

Stern is just not a smart man, and a horrible commish.

Stern answered the question twice.  Rome kept pressing so Stern got all smartass on him.  Stern probably shouldn't have said it given he is the commissioner of the NBA and that is a national radio show, but I have no real issue with it.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Stern's an incredibly smart man and a terrific commissioner.

The fact that you thought it could be rigged suggests that you might not be that familiar with the long, extensive lottery process. That's not a knock by any means because it's not all that well publicized. Here's a story about it from Zack Lowe: http://nba-point-forward.si.com/2012/05/30/nba-draft-lottery/

But based of Rome's profession, he should be. So either he's ignoring the information he should know for enterainment's sake, or he's as poor at his job as I believe he is.

  • It's all about the TEAM!
I typically find Stern funny. Nevermind he's not always sincerely credible on some matters, but his demeanor and style have always been pretty smooth for an old guy. And he often makes me laugh. For instance, at the draft he gets booed harshly and then steps up to the podium and says "Thank you for that". Makes me laugh out loud.

Now this exchange with him and Rome, I don't know whether to laugh at him for being so brazenly offensive, like for instance, his comment about needing to call Stephen A. Smith may have been the funniest comment of the whole conversation, what a put down! Or to feel like gee, he really was angry and was letting Rome know it. It seemed like they both got under both their skins and the exchange bordered on losing professionalism.

But, when I don't care....

I really laugh out loud listening to this!!!

Stern is a funny man!  :D

Agree with both Faf and Moranis.

Also the first thing that came to my mind.  Rome sounds like an NBC "reporter".  The "some have said that..." is manipulative and lazy.  I am no fan of Stern...But I have no problem with both his denial and indignance.  He simply can't go there.

steven i smith apparently was the squirrel who found an acorn....Predicting the score last night exactly...Sadly, that makes him more credible than Rome.
