How's my Historical Team? (Awesome right!)

Pretty much all my guys are All Stars, some Hall of Famers, and all are capable of lighting it up every night. How in the WORLD am I being left off best overall?

Probably because every team can make that similar claim.

AI played for defensive stats, not good defense.


He played the passing lanes. 


For every steal he got, he put himself in terrible position 4 times a game forcing the rest of the team to have to bail him out, creating open shots for the other team. 

Sorry, this is just plain wrong.

The guy was fast, athletic, and had an amazing gift for knowing where the ball would be and seeing the entire floor at once.

I mean, if I dislike some player enough I can find a negative reason to bash every part of his game, too, but AI was not even close to the horrendous player you make him out to be.

The whole "let's find fault with every thing the guy did" thing is a bit old, and kind of transparent.

The guy has serious issues off the court, and was far from the least selfish player in the NBA, but he was also an amzing basketball player, and not just because of his scoring.

You'd think he was the only guy on my team ... "one bad apple" syndrome in fantasy draft context, (I've learned a valuable lesson).

No, that's the exact descriptions that was discussed to no end on the different Philadelphia sports talk during AI's time there. 

Yeah, and I'm sure they had no bad feelings or subjective opinions about the guy, lol.

Anyway, despite the run-ins he had with Brown, the coach still was amazed by his game, as was John Thompson, (and Georgetown was a vrey team-oriented club).

Have to say, of all the many players I have watched since the early (whatevers, haha), he was easily one of the top ten exciting players to watch, and not just on offense.

To each his own ... the AI subject has officially been beaten to death.

And I think you will be hard pressed to find many posters on here who have not watched a lot of basketball.

^ Blocked shots and steals don't tell you everything you need to know about defense, though.

For instance, Raja Bell in his prime was a VASTLY superior defender to Mitch Richmond and especially Kevin Martin.  Bell was one of the best wing defenders in the league (although it never showed in terms of stats); Martin has consistently been one of the worst and softest.

Rondo is better than AI on defense, too.  They both rank highly in terms of steals, but Rondo is superior defensively.  It's why he's made 4 All-Defense teams (twice on the first team), while AI never made one.

Lebron vs. Kirilenko is interesting, but I think Lebron is just more versatile, and is more of a lockdown defender.  It's close, and could go either way, but I give Lebron the edge.

In terms of offensive firepower, or who would win between the Pacers and Diablos, it's not really relevant to my particular rankings, which are just measuring defense.  In terms of offense or best overall, I just thought that there were at least three teams that trumped both of your squads.

Roy, why did my team drop out of your top three?  For awhile you had the Mavs at #2, and then they aren't in the top 3.  Just wondering what changed your mind.

The top two I listed was just for the five teams that had posted press conferences to that point.

Your team made my top six.  This stuff is very, very subjective; I think the very small gap between your team and the top three was based on my perception that a lot of your starters were still in the "get mine" stage of their careers.  Additionally, I have a bit of an issue with Rose running an offense, at least against all-time level defenses.

Overall, though, I've got no qualms with other panelists ranking you top-3, or even #1 overall.  You're that close.

Mediocre to weak defense, and Vince Carter's me-first attitude hold you back.  Plus, I'm not nearly as high on Marc Gasol as you are.

I wasn't inferring that most people here haven't watched a lot of basketball, nor would I.

Just that I have, and including Cousey, Hondo, Russell, Bird, Jordan, Wilt, Oscar, Kareem, Magic, et al, AI would be about #10 or #11 on my list of "Most Exciting to Watch".

I'd take CP3 over Rose any day of the week on thirteen extra  times on Sunday.

At the points we've chosen them, Vince was a far better player than Pierce.

I like the Mash versus JJ match-up for both teams, although in the team context I like that I took mash towards the end of his career where he's more experienced.

I'm going to say this, but Dirk is better than the Mailman. Comprable all time scoring numbers without playing with John Stockton for his entire career as well as being an MVp and a champion.

I actually wonder if Gasol wouldn't have been a better fit  on-court for your team and Bynum would have been a better one for mine.
