And do what with the additional cap space?

We already have cap space with no players to sign. Unless you can give a list of players to sign, what would be the point of the additional cap space?

I see no reason for us to pay money and not get anything for it. Save that money for the future.

No. No. Absolutely not.

Pierce is a Celtics lifer. He deserves to be play for the C's for as long as he wants to. If he's 65 and still wants a roster spot, then give it to him.

You sound like more of a Pierce fan than a Celtics fan here.

I agree to not amnesty him, but only because I don't see how it could make our team significantly better.  If we could use that cap space to bring in a free agent that would significantly improve our franchise, I think its a no-brainer and Danny Ainge's past comments indicates that he thinks the same.

And after next season, I think we have to evaluate the situation similarly.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. As a Celtics fan Pierce has done too much for us to dump him like that.

I realize they aren't mutually exclusive, but if a person wants Pierce to remain here unconditionally, even at the expense of the success of the Celtics, then how does that not make the person more of a Pierce fan than a Celtics fan?

I don't think they should amnesty Pierce either way, but I think the path the Celtics take will depend heavily upon how we fare from here on out. If the Celtics lose this series in 5, I think Ainge might have to move on from the Big 3 era, but if they make this a series or win it, then Ainge almost has to keep it together.

I agree.  The only situation that I could even listen to amnestying Pierce this offseason is if we renounced our rights to everybody, keeping only Rondo, Avery, and JJJ to make a complete rebuilding effort and splitting up that $40+ mil in cap space to somehow bring in Gordon, Batum, Hibbert and possibly one of (or two of if cant land 1 from above) OJ Mayo, Jeff Green, Ryan Anderson, Ilyasova, or Javale McGee.

And that plan would be a long shot that I'm not so sure would work out, considering some of those FA's are restricted.  If we want to rebuild, I'd rather keep Pierce another year, maybe sign one of those above players this offseason, and go after Josh Smith or Dwight (if by the slim chance he's not extended with another team) the following offseason.

Can't see amnestying him.  We supposedly traded him to the Nets for their top 3 protected pick (ended up #6) and cap space, but Pierce nixed the deal.  How depressing would it be to flat out "amnesty" him a few months later without receiving even a lotto pick.

Best off just bringing everyone back.

No way. What an awful idea. Pierce is still one of the best players in the league at his position. With no big named free agents and already a ton of cap space, it really wouldnt make any sense except to clear a roster spot... why do that?

I never heard it was Pierce who blocked the deal. Is this true? I was under the impression that Jersey turned the deal down.
