Secondly, I probably wasn't quite old enough to truly appreciate them in their primes. I'm 28 (and a half!), I've played basketball my whole life, and watched it just the same - but I'd that I truly understood the game up until the past few years. So there's some understanding that my memories of their primes are slightly jaded and not terrifically educated.

10/83. High five!

Ha. 11/83, hence my more youthful spirit.

For the people that automatically pick Duncan over KG how much will the pendulum swing if the Celts play the Spurs in the finals and win?

I think as long as KG plays a fairly prominent role it should swing to at least even. What do you think?

Would he need to get MVP or would that completely swing it? Would he have to shut down Duncan and still average 18-20? Would it really not do too much for you?

Its a long way away and maybe wont happen but god that'd be fun. And think of the type of motivation KG would have with the constant chatter about Duncan being better

It wouldn't make a difference.  This is not Duncan vs. KG in their prime.

In his prime, I consider Duncan the top PF to ever play and a top 10 player.

In his peak, KG was the better overall player.

KG was more versatile, the better defender and rebounder.

Duncan has ZERO seasons with 30% def. rebounding while KG has 3. (Rodman had 9 straight, Howard has 4, Mutumbo 2, Ben Wallace & Love 1)

I don't know if the gap was far enough for their relative team performance.  Duncan's teams had better talent, yes, but they didn't exactly squeak by Garnett's Wolves teams.  One franchise won 4 rings while the other took almost a decade to get out of the first round.  Heck, Pierce made it out of the first round with worse teams.

Pierce played in the East. If KG played in the East he would have  gotten out of the first round. West was way better then the East. Kobe, Shaq, Duncan just to name a few..These are the teams KG played against in the 1st round. You have to have more talent then KG had around him most of the time to beat these teams

Also no teammate on the Wolves teams were ever as good as Antione Walker

That is scary sad? And I am a big Toine homer.

If Tim Duncan hates you, you must not be liked by virtually anyone.

I think this really supports the notion that KG is a bully, punk, dirty, or whatever you want to call him.  I mean Tim Duncan hates you.  That says a great deal.

Can you ever say anything positive about our team?

its not his team

Wheh 11/16, I thought we'd have to be enemies.

I only acknowledge Shigeru Miyamoto as sharing it, the rest can get out.

Since the BOS-LA rubber match is looking like a lost cause, I would so love to have a San Antonio-Boston Finals this year.

Long way to go but certainly within the realm of possibility.

I've wanted a Celtics v Spurs Finals ever since KG came to Boston.  I would love to see KG finally get his chance to show who the better player really is.  No better stage than the Finals.

I'd love such a match, too.

Both of these players are having throwback years.

I love it!

But like Roy said on the blog front page - I appreciate BOTH. The sad thing is that in 2-3 years, they will BOTH be retired.

Can anyone here imagine an NBA without Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan?

LaMarcus, Blake, KLove, Bosh, Boozer, Amar'e - they have HUGE shoes to fill.

I would love some of the other matchups as well.

Rondo vs Parker
Allen vs Ginobili
Doc vs Pop

It's would be a basketball purists dream!

We should probably mention that KG's early first round losses were to the Rockets, Sonics, and Blazers.  No Shaq, Kobe, or Duncan there. And Gugliotta and Marbury weren't that bad in his earlier days.

KG's teammates were lesser than Duncan's.  No doubt.  But the gap isn't as wide as some would make it out to be.

In his prime, I consider Duncan the top PF to ever play and a top 10 player.

I, too, consider Duncan to be a top 10 player of all time.  Where we differ is that I believe the same to be true about KG.

I frankly think that KG was the best player in the NBA from about 2003 until about 2008, and the only reason that Duncan is so universally considered better is the championships.  So my opinion probably won't be changed by what happens from here on.

That said, both KG and Duncan are playing at an unreal level right now.  If that continues, I think it'd be a bit of a cop out to "disqualify" it from their resumes just because they're older.

Yeah I think it's absurd not to factor in this year if Kg and the celts beat the Spurs and Duncan.

They are the same age, Duncan has a better team, homecourt advantage and your telling me that if KG gets MVP of the finals that doens't change anything? Give me a break. I'm sure everyone would jump all over KG if Duncan won the finals MVP and the Spurs won even though, again Duncan has the better team.

Why would this year not count and 08 count? Does 08 count?

I think it would prove more if Kg did this. A ton more. Basically if KG won the finals MVP at age 36, especially on this team (5th in Eastern conference) imagine what he would have done with a 5th seeded team a decade ago.

Come on now.  Anyone can cherry pick stats for one guy over the other.  For instance, KG has ZERO seasons with 10% off. rebounding while Duncan has 7.
