Indeed,

One could have killed a guy and the other clearly could not have.  Can we agree on that?

Well, this distracts from the real question (and beyond the 10 game suspension number, I'm agreeing with a lot of what you and others like jdz are saying), but no.

Bynum body checked a guy half his size while he was in the air. Could've easily broken Barea's neck, or at least as easily as Artest could've hurt Harden.

I agree with that Smitty.

The only question is whether Artest's incident was indeed accidental or intentional and while you all have your opinions, only WP knows the true answer to that question.  If intentional, which is my opinion, then that is an act to hurt someone, opposed to Bynum's which was an act of basketball frustration.  I think MWP's is much worse and deserves 15 games, similar to the 'Melo suspension.

Also worth consideration is MWP has a much more violent track record.

What did Bynum get for that hit on Barea?  Wasn't it 10 games?  Personally, I thought the punishment was too light for that play.  Based on that, Peace will probably get a similar suspension.  I'll think it should be more.

If there's any justice in the world, the Lakers will be out of the playoffs before the Cheap Shot Artist Formerly Known As Ron Artest suits up again.

I mean, I get the feeling and logic behind a larger suspension, I just don't agree with it. Its a pretty valid and supportable stance, no denying it. Just don't agree.

5 games for Bynum.

We're talking about a career ender if he does this to Marquis or Pietrus. You only get so many concussions you can withstand. Should be 10 games lost at least.

Does Harden have a concussion? If so, that's a game changer.

Fair enough.  I just think that the one thing the NBA has done a good job of since the Palace incident a decade ago is to clean up violence in the league.  The league's image took a big blow from that Detroit brawl that still lingers to this day.

I'm proud of the fact that the NBA probably has less instances of unnecessary violence than any other major US sport.  I'd like the league to continue to do what it can to help keep it that way.

Yea, it is. He apparently has to be cleared by a professor of neurology to play as mandated by the league. Should make things much more interesting with the increasing magnifying glass on brain injuries when it comes to professional sports.

A lot of players make "heat of the moment" mistakes, but Ron's "heat" is ridiculously higher than anyone else's.

Its pretty hard to not get at least a mild concussion when someone elbows you in the back of the head with that sort of force.

I'd say it's easy to get a concussion that way, not far from uncommon to avoid one. I'm no expert though. And as I understand it, everyone has a different threshold for that sort of thing.

I'd say it's like if someone got punched in the jaw. It's easy to see how it could be broken, but it's easy to see how you could walk. Away from it too.

Everybody remembers the Bynum hit from last year, but does anybody remember Artest's contribution?

Stern needs to be Super Stern here.

I think the example I would set is this. The headlines would read.

" Ron Artest Expelled from the NBA" And maybe I would reinstate him the following year if he was a model citizen.

He is forever a moron and that can not be tolerated, Harden is a budding star and he could have ended that for him. Come down Super hard Stern.

The worse thing was him squaring up going into the fighting stance after you would think it was the UFC watching him. It was somewhat hilarious made him look even more like a fool.
