  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Today is the birthday of Nelson Algren, the guy who, to my knowledge, popularized the famous 'three rules' gag in his famous book 'A Walk On The Wild Side'.

The actual quote was:

Quote
“Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mom’s. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own.”

But, its been reprised. You may recognize this from 'Teen Wolf':

"I have three rules which I live by: Never get less than 12 hours sleep, never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city, and never go near a lady with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick with that, and everything else is cream cheese."

This is a pretty well-known gag. One that I have myself used here:

I've had a couple of rules to live by for a while now...."don't play freeze tag on the highway, don't play cards with a man named after a city, and don't under any circumstances trade with roy hobbs."

So, in honor of a depressing news day, what are your 'three rules'?

"You've gotta respect a 15-percent 3-point shooter. A guy
like that is always lethal." - Evan 'The God' Turner

  • Don't trust a stranger that says, "Here, let me hold that for you".
  • Don't get involved with a woman (or man if that's for you) that is secretive about their finances.
  • Don't say No to a good time.  When you have regrets in life, it's over the chances you didn't take rather than the ones you did.

TP's for getting in, and awesome rules.

Thanks, unfortunately the biggest headaches I've experienced in life have been when I've deviated from those rules.

I guess this is the closest I can come...as often...I'll fudge the rules a bit

1. Drive defensively and always wear a seat belt

2. Try to keep the wife happy

3. Follow the 10 commandments/8 fold path

1. Always draft the guy in the NFL draft that slips because of weed.  Thank you Aaron Hernandez.

2. Never go to sleep mad at somebody that you love

3. Don't be late, so much of life starts with being where you are supposed to be on time.
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

Taking a cue from Slam in my three rules you should never break:

Never fight a fight you can walk away from, never gamble what you can't lose, and never be late for anything if you can help it.

Your 3 rules would be tough for me to follow. Coffee is awesome all the time, 3-4am is when i throw my sexy parties**..rule 3 is golden though.

What's the 8-fold path?

3. Don't be late, so much of life starts with being where you are supposed to be on time.

Ah, you took my 'don't be late' one. I learned that one the hard way. I also believe strongly in the 'don't go to sleep mad' rule as well. Good rules.

  • Basketball is Newtonian Physics
1)  Be easy to amuse, hard to offend.

2)  Never drink decaff coffee.  What's the point?  (can be used with beer as well)

3)  If you have cake, eat it before it goes stale.

Here's one I try to follow:

Don't be "that guy" in whatever situation you are in.

1. You dance if you want to
2. You can leave your friends behind
