  • Rondo = Good
Doc didn't sign an extension to coach a core of Rondo,PP,Okafor picks and role players for the next 3 years.

Plus all the picks are likely to be 15,20 and 25 . Maybe if we are getting a top 10 pick I would , but there is no way NO is giving up their own top 5 picks, it would be Minnys(15ish)

They have bigger plans than this IMO.

um . . yeah . . he signed an extension to coach Rondo, picks, and various other flotsam for the next few years.

this is a rebuilding situation, guys.  ainge and doc don't have some fabulous secret plan to magically convince Dwight that he MUST sign in Boston.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

Draft picks, because until we have a real young superstar on this team there's no point in trying to attract big name free agents.

We do have a real, young superstar on this team.

I wouldnt mind this trade at all.  I think it could work out extremely well. NOs pick will be very high, and without Rubio, I expect Minni to fall into a high draft position as well.  Emeka will help us compete this year, while the potentially top 10-12 pick we'd receive could be huge for rebuilding.

We might be able to package the 12th pick we received, the (lets say) 20th pick we'd have, and cash, to move up to pick 7 to 9th, and get a shot at Rivers or another premiere player that would otherwise be out of our reach.  If that happened, we'd get Rivers, and have another pick around 24 to use on a big.

Then we could use the 8 mil or whatever we'd have in cap space after signing Emeka, to sign another decent player, to use along with Emeka in a sign and trade to land a superstar center.

So we end with rondo, Rivers, Pierce, Bass, (Superstar Center),  with Green, Johnson, Bradley, and rookie big off the bench...possibly with kg or Ray as well for the vet min if they stay.  thats my dream lol

I like Bradley, but I wouldn't consider him a superstar.

I'd take the cap space. I'd rather pay for proven players than go into the crapshoot known as the late first-round.

Ha ha.  I was actually thinking about another young Celtics point guard.  And, no it's not E'Twaun Moore.

The only picks worth more than cap space is lottery picks.  You really have little chance of landing a franchise player, or even an impact player outside of the lottery.  At least with cap space you get to chose the players you sign; for the most part you already know what they bring to the table.  Even with lottery picks you never really know who's going to make it and who's going to be bust.

"@SamAmicoFSO: Cavs will stay in touch w/Hornets however. Hornets said to still be entertaining offers for either of 2 first rounders to dump Okafor deal"

Would you deal Jo, Dooling and Wilcox for Okafor and either Minnesota or No's first?

If New Orleans were willing to sacrifice their own pick in this summer's draft, yeah, I make this trade.

I don't do it for Minnesota's pick though. Not at this point. I'd revisit it in the off-season around draft time or after free agency. But I wouldn't make it right now.

See if you can swing a trade for Emeka and NO's pick, try and trade Ray/Bass/our #1 for Josh Smith.

I agree, in this case we would be getting a lottery pick.

Just curious what other's think of this as a potential roster for next season.

C-Okafor
PF-Johnson
SF-Pierce
SG-???
PG-Rondo

Bench
Bradley
Moore
Pick#14 (Minny)
Pick#18 (Bos)
Pick#25 (LAC)

Additionally, we'd have about $10m in cap space if we renounced everyone else.

Draft picks are more valuable because you can trade them.  Cap space is worthless unless a free agent wants to come to your team and is only worthwhile for players under contract if the other team needs/has to trade them.  Draft picks get you cheap, young players every year and can be used to entice other teams into trading with you.

that's not necessarily true. the point is to acquire as many assets as possible. that way you develop them, maybe you'll get lucky and one of them turns out to be really good, or you trade those assets for a more established player. you can have all the capsapce in the world but it wont do you any good if no great fa's dont want to come to boston.

I'd do that deal in a heartbeat.

It's about as perfect of a deal as possible, as it helps us both short term and long term.

Short term we get an excellent defensive center who is serviceable on offense.  If we have any shot to win it all this year, this is how we do it.

Long term it also makes sense.  The chances of us getting Dwight or Deron this offseason are practically nil.  Then what's the point of actually having cap space?  So we can go out and make stupid signings like Joe Dumars did a few summers back with Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva?

Okafor only has two years left on his deal after this year, which puts him in line to expire when PP does in 2014.  If there's no one to sign this offseason anyway, all it means is that we hold onto him until the summer of 2013, when we have two choices: trade him as an expiring contract or let his deal run out for 2014 when we make a big run with his money and PP's money cleared.  At that point, we'd hopefully have developed some young players around Rondo to draw in some FAs (which is where the pick from NO helps).  Furthermore, being part of a playoff run (and even better, a championship title run) would jack Okafor's value up big time.

Just to make this clear, New Orleans is NOT going to be giving up their own pick just to ship out Okafor.  It would be the Minny pick.  Let's at least be realistic please.

I think Bass stays (I doubt he picks up his option but I bet we get something done with him). I also think we sign Green for small money (if we use up all of our salary cap space we could sign him with the room exception of 2.5 MM). Then I bet we bring back Ray for cheap.
Probably:
5- Okafor, Leonard (Minn pick)
4- Bass, Plumlee (LAC pick), JJJ
3- Pierce, Green
2- Ray, Rivers
1- Rondo, Bradley, Moore

Not elite but Rivers, Plumlee, JJJ, Bradley along with Rondo and Green could form a core for years to come.
