Folly.

The trick is to find a good big man to play alongside Rondo; it's not to find one to replace him.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

It's a big-picture trade pretending to be a short-sighted trade.  You just have to look at it closer.

I'm with C18.  I don't see any picture where it benefits us.

This team already resembles an old folks home.

We need guys who can be All-Stars in 2013, not guys who were All-Stars in 2000.

I did before I posted.  There is no formula that makes this a sound trade.

I believe this is the best Rondo trade, for now and for future:
Rondo, JO and Pavlović for Nash and Gortat.
Many Celtics fans who are against this trade dont realize this:
Steve Nash is 38 years old, but he's like Ray Allen pshizical freak and can play at least 2 years at near all-star level. This year he's shooting career best 57,1%Fg. He's career 43% 3point and 90% ft shooter. He's leading NBA in assist with very bad suporting cast. You can play Nash in close games because he will make a open jumper or free throw.
Gortat is very underated center with friendly contract. Lets see comparasion:
GORTAT: 27y, 15,2ppg, 10,1rpg, 1,6bpg, 55,8%Fg, 65,9%Ft, 7,2 salary in 2012/13
PERKINS: 27y, 4,8ppg, 5,6rpg, 1,1bpg, 45,1%Fg, 77,0%Ft, 7,8 salary in 2012/13
CHANDLER: 29y, 11,9ppg, 10,0rpg, 1,1bpg, 70,1%Fg, 70,4%Ft, 13,6 salary in 2012/13
NOAH: 26y, 9,0ppg, 9,5rpg, 1,3bpg, 50,8%Fg, 76,3%Ft, 11,3 salary in 2012/13
HAYWOOD: 32y, 5,3ppg, 6,6rpg, 1,1bpg, 53,4%Fg, 50,0%Ft, 8,3 salary in 2012/13
NENE: 29y, 13,5ppg, 7,5rpg, 0,8bpg, 51,9%Fg, 65,1%Ft, 13,0 salary in 2012/13
BIENDRIS: 25y, 2,6ppg, 4,9rpg, 1,3bpg, 61,0%Fg, 20,0%Ft, 9,0 salary in 2012/13
M.GASOL: 26y, 15,0ppg, 10,0rpg, 2,3bpg, 49,3%Fg, 74,5%Ft, 13,9 salary in 2012/13
BOGUT: 27y, 11,3ppg, 8,3rpg, 2,0bpg, 44,9%Fg, 60,9%Ft, 13,0 salary in 2012/13
OKAFOR: 29y, 9,9ppg, 7,9rpg, 1,0bpg, 53,3%Fg, 51,4%Ft, 13,5 salary in 2012/13
JEFFERSON: 26y, 18,6ppg, 8,9rpg, 1,6bpg, 47,2%Fg, 74,7%Ft, 15,0 salary in 2012/13
VAREJAO: 29y, 10,8ppg, 11,5rpg, 0,7bpg, 51,4%Fg, 67,2%Ft, 8,4 salary in 2012/13

So there's no way we can have a better center for so much money. If this trade goes down, we would have addition 3,5mil cap space. If we have chance to sign both DWILL and DH12 great, if not resign Nash, Ray and KG to 2-year deals to expire along with Pierce, and with rest of space sign Jeff Green and resign Pietrus:
2012/3 backup roster:
Nash/Bradley/Moore
Pietrus/Allen
Pierce/Green
Garnett/Johnson
Gortat/Stiemsma and two first-round picks.
2012/3 dream roster
Williams/Bradley
Pietrus/ Allen
Pierce/Celtics pick
Johnson/Clippers pick
Howard/Stiemsma and some vet.min guys

So this trade wont mortage our future and drastically increase our chances this year.

Refusing to let go?

I doubt that management is willing to gamble on this roster. We don't want to end up doing the kinds of moves that Cleveland and Orlando did in their desperation to get their rosters over the hump. We need guys who will peak in the future.

I would think that Rondo would really frustrate Phoenix fans who are used to a PG who can hit shots. That would be a difficult direction for their management to take.

I think Gortat is doing this well only because of Nash. I'm pretty sure he'd do the same with Rondo (Rondo still hasn't got a partner inside. If he had one, we'd be amazing. See: Shaq).

That said, this trade is good only if we get picks in return. If they see Gortat the way I see him, we'll get picks (since he'll come back to earth without Nash).

If they don't see it the way I see it, then I think there needs to be a third team involved. This is the best you will see out of Gortat and we'd be a bit stranded after this season.

But Gortat would still have Nash. And KG, PP and RA to keep teams from double him.

Gortat+Nash 4 Rondo+JO+Picks

Celtics get a real Center in Gortat. The best passing Point Guard in the NBA shooting, and a lights out Shooters in Steve Nash. Steve is a little long in the tooth but he is playing at a high level.

Suns finally #FreeNash to a contender. They get a nice young piece in Rondo to build a team around. And some picks.
There is no way I'm sending Rondo for the 3rd oldest guy in the league, and certainly not with draft picks as well

This is a horrible idea, both for the present and the future.
The last thing we want is the Big 3 having to adjust to a new
point guard.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
Not a bad idea.

Rajon Rondo's on ball defense is not extraordinary(very very good though), and like a lot of people say, he gambles far too much. Even if Nash's opponent blows by him, it's like Rondo's situation where he goes for the steal and lets his opposing PG go right past him.

PLUS we get a legit big man that already has chemistry with Nash. I'm sure Nash would LOVE to play with the Big 3.

I don't understand how this makes us so much older...

If anything, this trade would drastically improve our half-court offense, something we need.

We free up even MORE cap space for next year, which would always help. The 11m of Nash expiring is pretty much Rondo's contract. We can use that portion to resign the Big 3/other players, but still have ample space because we don't have to use what we had before on resigning Allen, KG, etc.

I like Marcus Smart
