double edit: And I think NJ knew that. They knew that Melo was going to NY, and they knew that Deron Williams wanted to go somewhere else, but with Melo gone, the options got a lot smaller, so NJ took Deron Williams.

Denver might have traded Melo to NJ, but he flatly said he wasn't re-signing there. I don't think he would have either. Deron Williams is proving that nobody can be bullied into signing a contract they genuinely don't want to sign.

If I recall correctly, sources were pretty conflicted there.

I don't think you're recalling correctly, at least not the denouement. Towards the end, it was pretty obvious that Melo was saying he flat out would resign with NY, but wouldn't with NJ, and NJ was saying they'd call his bluff. They lied.

EDIT: You are right though in some ways, for a really long time Melo either no-commented it, or was vaguely 'focusing on basketball'. Only at the end was it leaked that he said he flat out 'wouldn't sign anywhere but NY'.

Could've been posturing, or I might just be not remembering this correctly but I could've sworn near the end he became open to signing an extension there. I'll have to leave it at that, cuz there's no chance I'm sifting through last year's Melo rumors.

Now I know you're wrong here. The D-Will stuff was completely hush-hush. I think their GM even went as far to say that he waited the Melo stuff out to see who the loser was between the Knicks and Nets and then offered D-Will.

That Deron Williams was available via trade was hush-hush?

There were teams across the league who were complaining that they never had a chance to bid on Deron Williams. NJ never put him on the market.

People expected he'd end up on the market at some point but nobody knew he was available right there right then.

The same thing happens on here for these drafts all the time.

Here's the best I could find after running a few quick searches. Who's the super well connected writer in Utah? I'd bet that's where I originally read about the Jazz' trade tactics.

It was with that understanding that Utah, one of the most tight-lipped franchises in pro sports, quietly began inquiring about potential deals for Williams this week, and it did not take them long to hit on a team with quality young assets looking for a star player—New Jersey. The parameters of a deal were arranged Tuesday night, general manager Kevin O’Connor said, and the deal was finalized Wednesday morning.

A) No, Who's the GM of the LA Lakers in the Pick 2 Draft.

B) It doesn't really matter anyways, it actually reinforces the notion that Melo wasn't going to resign in NJ, because if they dind't have a backup plan when they allowed him to fly to NY, why else did they give up?

The Nuggets informed them that they liked the Knicks trade offer a lot more and the Nets got tired of the give and take?

Or Proporov might've wanted to get back to his jet ski tricks which are way more awesome than Melo anyhow.
