Deron Williams is proving that nobody can be bullied into signing a contract they genuinely don't want to sign.If I recall correctly, sources were pretty conflicted there. I don't think you're recalling correctly, at least not the denouement. Towards the end, it was pretty obvious that Melo was saying he flat out would resign with NY, but wouldn't with NJ, and NJ was saying they'd call his bluff. They lied. EDIT: You are right though in some ways, for a really long time Melo either no-commented it, or was vaguely 'focusing on basketball'. Only at the end was it leaked that he said he flat out 'wouldn't sign anywhere but NY'.

double edit: And I think NJ knew that. They knew that Melo was going to NY, and they knew that Deron Williams wanted to go somewhere else, but with Melo gone, the options got a lot smaller, so NJ took Deron Williams.

Now I know you're wrong here. The D-Will stuff was completely hush-hush. I think their GM even went as far to say that he waited the Melo stuff out to see who the loser was between the Knicks and Nets and then offered D-Will.

NJ never put him on the market. People expected he'd end up on the market at some point but nobody knew he was available right there right then.
It was with that understanding that Utah, one of the most tight-lipped franchises in pro sports, quietly began inquiring about potential deals for Williams this week, and it did not take them long to hit on a team with quality young assets looking for a star player—New Jersey. The parameters of a deal were arranged Tuesday night, general manager Kevin O’Connor said, and the deal was finalized Wednesday morning.Read more: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nba/feed/2011-02/nba-trade-deadline-178521/story/jazz-made-preemptive-strike-to-move-williams-and-avoid-melo-like-mess#ixzz1lv4GqNhc

B) It doesn't really matter anyways, it actually reinforces the notion that Melo wasn't going to resign in NJ, because if they dind't have a backup plan when they allowed him to fly to NY, why else did they give up?
