If this does go through, I think Stern has succeeded in what I think is his goal: It's not just about big cities acquiring star players, it's about the teams that let their star players go for peanuts. Stern basically said "CP either needs to take a major paycut by giving up his bird rights or we need to get X,Y, and Z, and I'm perfectly happy to let CP play the season out then walk as a FA if he wants less money." I think he was sick of owners panicking and wanting to get SOMETHING out of a FA leaving and thus facilitating a bird rights max deal for a crappy package.
Orlando, take note. You should get EVERYTHING for Dwight or just call his bluff and make him take a non-bird contract.
