I'd prefer to have kept Davis. Bass couldn't learn Orlando's playbook, was regularly out of position on defense. He's a better rebounder, but even less suited to a role as a stop gap center.

Blah.

We clearly got the better end of this trade. Bass is a lot more cut and has a major spring in his step so he's definitely an upgrade over Davis. He's also a better team player than Big Baby.
I happen to like the trade because I think Davis wore out his welcome with front office, coaching staff and team mates but I think it ridiculous to judge who got the better of this deal based on how "cut" a player looks or how high he can jump. That's absurd.

I think we got the better of the deal because we are making pretty much an overall lateral move but will be on the hook for about $18 million less.

Or $22 million less.  After BBD just established Bass' market value for him ($6.5m+), there's no way that Bass exercises his $4 million player option next season (barring injury).
Good point...even better....$22 million.

Here is a good article from our SB friends over at Orlando Pinstriped Post.

http://www.orlandopinstripedpost.com/2011/5/24/2186917/orlando-magic-player-grades-brandon-bass

The conclusion, for everyone who says TL;DR:

"Overall, though, Bass gave the Magic fairly consistent, solid production before mysteriously tailing off in the playoffs; relatedly, he couldn't buy a basket in that series against the Atlanta Hawks. In any event, Orlando got what it bargained--and I do mean bargain, as $4 million annually for a player of Bass' caliber qualifies a steal--for with the veteran big man this season. Better rebounding numbers--playing alongside Howard can't possibly be the only reason they're so ordinary--would have boosted his grade here."

Grade: B

From what I've seen Bass is a solid player. I definitely think we got the better end of the deal.

The Howard affecting his rebounding numbers point is great, and makes sense.  I also think he is a good offensive rebounder and Big Baby was always at his best to me when he was showing the hustle to hit the offensive glass, but he got away from that.

Good news.

Bass is a decent upgrade over Davis. Much more reliable offensively, less awful on the boards. Similar flaws.

can anybody quote hollingers break down of the trade for the celtics and the magic?

in the title he says the celtics "tooled around orlando"

Quote from: ESPN
Celtics sign-and-trade Glen Davis to Orlando for Brandon Bass: Thumbs down for Orlando, Thumbs way up for Boston.

This trade is basically a good organization running circles around a mediocre one, and in a year it's going to become obvious what a steal Boston got with this deal.

Faced with a situation in which the Celtics didn't want to lose an asset (Davis) but still wanted to preserve cap space for the summer of 2012, the Celtics did the only thing they could -- sign-and-trade him for a one-year rental. Bass technically is signed through 2012-13, but he has an opt-out after this season, and since he makes only $4 million per annum he's likely to take the out.

We don't know the details on Davis' contract yet, but I suspect it's four years, $26.05 million. The biggest clue is that the only reason he would go for it is if it paid him more than the midlevel exception. With the Magic using the amnesty clause on Gilbert Arenas to put themselves under the luxury tax, they can take back 150 percent of Bass' pay plus $100,000, which would be a deal starting at $6.1 million. Add in 4.5 percent raises and the full deal is likely four years, $26.05 million.

For his one-year rental in Beantown, Bass will be perfect as a first big man off the bench. While he isn't on Davis' level as a team defender, he's strong enough to play as an undersized 5 just as Davis did. And offensively, these guys aren't even close. Bass and Davis both shoot a lot of midrange jumpers; the difference is that Bass makes them. He has had a TS% of 56 for four straight seasons and averaged over 17.0 points per 40 minutes the past three.

Although he's a good team defender who willingly takes charges and can defend post players, I consider Davis one of the league's most overrated players. Offensively, he's really not very good -- a pick-and-pop 4 who mostly shoots 2-point jumpers and mostly misses them. Davis' true shooting percentages the past three years are 50.2, 50.0 and 49.9 -- which is terrible for a power forward -- and he scores and assists at a fairly low rate.

So basically, the Celtics got a better player who makes less money while preserving all their cap flexibility, and the Magic get another iffy contract. About the only benefit to Orlando is that Davis is friends with Dwight Howard, but we saw how far that got the Hornets when they traded for Jarrett Jack.

I like this move. I like it even more than paying BBD 6.5 million a year.

Bass is sort of like Krstic in that he's an above-average backup who isn't good enough to be a starter on a championship contender.  (Other than noting that they are both bigs who can make jump shots, I won't claim there are any other parallels.)  I mean, yeah, he might be tolerable as a stop-gap solution if he is surrounded by better players, but you're looking for an upgrade.

He's certainly an option for the fifth guy in end-of-game scenarios.  I think his free-throw shooting ability should make him an offensive upgrade in the fourth quarter.  He sounds like he will get his shots because he will move and get open, rather than teams being willing to let Davis take shots.

I'm not going to treat Bass as the magic bullet who makes the team clearly better, but I have a hard time seeing him being a downgrade and he's much more than I thought was possible in a S&T for BBD.

Has there been an official word on the numbers of Davis' new contract?

I wonder if there's a small trade exception (under $2 mil) generated in the deal for Boston to use down the line.

I think this is a great trade for the celtics....they save $$ and get a better player IMO.

bass is a better shooter and more athletic.

If we resign Green to backup SF...we've got some nice youth athleticism on the bench and guys who can score. imagine those guys on the fastbreak with rondo??

It never fails, it seems like team always will bite on players that kill them...I always thought Baby would end up in either Orlando or Detroit since he always destroyed them...

You only get an exception if you trade to a team under the cap. Orlando did not use capspace to absorb Davis's deal, they used the 150% rule as a team over the cap but below the tax. So no excepion.
