Assuming the team stays as it is (no Howard), I think this trade could potentially hurt the Lakers short term.  Long term it's good, but let's look at it closer.

If Paul came to the C's, the starting lineup would've stayed the same other than at the PG, where we would've upgraded.

With the Lakers, they get a major upgrade at the 1 spot, but they actually severely downgrade in two major positions.

Could it actually work out because CP3 is so good?  Yes.  But I think this is more of a short term gamble for the Lakers.  Remember, Kobe has never really coexisted with a true PG before.  The Payton experiment never worked out.  However, I think CP3's superior shooting touch should help out with that.

I don't think it's a bad trade for Lakers, because of what some have pointed... it's like when the Celtics traded for Ray Ray to get KG. The BIG difference is Orlando's GM would be crazy, and public enemy #1 if he traded Howard to the Lakers, unless they are getting Kobe Bryant. It would make sense for the Lakers, of course, but that's not going to happen.

So the Lakers and Howard will wait until next summer, and then sign him as a FA (Howard will loose money on his new contract, but he'll be the new Lakers "big center" and that will mean lots of money).

Because of that, the 2011-2012 Lakers will be a big if in the West. They are losing their best two players in the 2010 Finals, but they just acquired the best PG in the league. Injuries could play a factor also, so in my opinion, they're not the favorites to get out of the west. In 2012-2013, with Dwight and CP3... maybe. But not now.

Clearly, the trade is worse for CP3, who will have to share the ball with Mr. Ballhog himself, Co-b. Our Big 3 have shown their sacrifice for the team, while his new teammates are, at best case, crazy (Metta World Peace). I can't wait to see Bryant blaming CP3 for not passing enough.

As for the Celtics, the only PG I'd trade Rondo for is a Laker now, so we'd better enjoy having Rondo. We have our chances, maybe not to land DH12, but to find an athletic rebounding/blocking/defense machine to pair him with RR and some scorers at the wing. The Wilt Lakers were also going to dominate the league, but you all know what happened.

Go Celtics!

I don't see Hondo or Bill Russell in a Celtics uniform currently.

This is a monster trade for the Lakers.

Here is an additional piece of information not mentioned here yet:  The Lakers gain TWO trade exceptions in this deal.

They gain a trade exception for the difference in salary between Gasol and CP3 (about $2.5 million) and another exception for Odom's salary ($8.9 million).

They are trading away about $27 million and acquiring only $16 million, so they get $11 million in trade exceptions.

That $8.9 million trade exception can be used to acquire a very good starting power forward.

I don't think so.   Orlando can do better. Plus, history does favor a keen reluctance for Orlando to hand the Lakers another dynasty.

This trade is nothing short of fantastic for the Lakers.  When you can acquire a young superstar for two aging vets (one of whom has a bad contract) you do it 100% of the time.

I am still shocked and sickened that Houston facilitated this.  So much for Boy Wonder Morey.

yeah, i really don't understand how a guy as smart as daryl morey could have been a part of this.  i have to wonder if he's been feeling pressure from ownership to make the rockets a playoff team right away.  he's been stockpiling assets and just looking to develop young guys, waiting for the big haul.  you wouldn't think he'd cash in for a 31 year old pau gasol.

Such as? What trade offers do you expect Orlando to receive?

The Rockets had lousy trade assets. They were never going to get a big fish.

perhaps not, but this trade doesn't make them much better (if at all) then they were before.  why trade away the assets you have for a lateral move at best?

the clippers can offer a much better package than anything the lakers can.  what they weren't willing to offer for chris paul they will probably be willing to offer for dwight howard.

Rumor was they received an offer of Brooke Lopez and 2 #1's for DH.  I think that is significantly better than DH for Bynum.

Frankly, doesn't EVERY team in the league stop and think for a minute if DH is on the market -- who wouldn't you trade for him?  I am just guessing (and hoping) that an injury prone Bynum cannot be the best offer.

It's going to be fantastic when Okafor is added to the deal, too, to make salaries match.  Then, the Lakers flip Bynum for Howard.

C: Howard
PF: Okafor
SF: Doesn't Matter
SG: Kobe
PG: CP3
