PLEASE NOTE: These are the final rules despite what the original ones say right below. Copy and paste the most current vote tally. Then add 4 pts. to three people and subtract 4 pts. from three others. Do not vote twice in a row. The goal is to select who we collectively think are the worst villains from this pool of candidates. If you think someone is not the worst villain, subtract 4 pts.. Conversely, if you think someone should be considered as one of the worst sports villains, add 4 pts. to their current total.

Ok, this is how the game works. You can vote as often as you like but never twice in a row. Simply copy and paste the previous vote total. Add two points to three names and subtract two from three others.

At Celticsboard.net, we were discussing Serena William's recent hissy fit. That has inspired me to start this game. Perhaps we can collectively end up with a top ten list for who have been the worst villains in sports history.

If anyone has any suggestions for additions to nominate, please do so while the game is still at the beginning. We don't want any Rosie Ruiz type controversy. I will try to do a quick search and come up with a good chunk of candidates. Each one will start off with 20 points.

John McEnroe (20)
Serena Williams (20)
Lebron James (20)
Kobe Bryant (20)
Andrew Bynum (20)
Elizabeth Lambert (20)
Mike Tyson (20)
Ty Cobb (20)
Dennis Rodman (20)
Ulf Samuelsson (20)
Paul O'Neill (20)
John Rocker (20)
Woody Hayes (20)
Shooter McGavin (20)
Ernie McCracken   (20)
Barry Bonds (20)
Bobby Knight (20)
Al Davis (20)
OJ Simpson (20)
Tonya Harding (20)
Robert Irsay (20)
Rosie Ruiz (20)

I admit it can be tough voting. There are many bad guys on the list. There are others who maybe deserve some sort of amnesty or empathy or something.

Well, I'll vote for Tonya Harding, OJ Simpson, and Woody Hayes. The first two were involved in criminal activity. Hayes is best remembered for punching an opponent.

Perhaps it will be easier to whittle folks off the list. I do not think Lebron James being obnoxious necessarily signifies he's a villain. McGavin and McCracken aren't even real people.

John McEnroe (20)
Serena Williams (20)
Lebron James (18)
Kobe Bryant (20)
Andrew Bynum (20)
Elizabeth Lambert (20)
Mike Tyson (20)
Ty Cobb (20)
Dennis Rodman (20)
Ulf Samuelsson (20)
Paul O'Neill (20)
John Rocker (20)
Woody Hayes (22)
Shooter McGavin (18)
Ernie McCracken   (18)
Barry Bonds (20)
Bobby Knight (20)
Al Davis (20)
OJ Simpson (22)
Tonya Harding (22)
Robert Irsay (20)
Rosie Ruiz (20)

I'm no fan of Serena's but I have no problem with how she reacted to a bogus call.  The call was about as obscene as the fumble call in the Lions-Bears game last opening NFL day. You can't selectively apply rules...Particularly in a final.  Looked worse that the official has a history with Serena.

Again, I'm no fan.  But Serena's on-court postgame interview was completely classy.

Also putting Knight and even Hayes in this group is a reach.  Both....Particularly Knight produced great men outside of the game.  Knight because of what he demanded of his players.

I voted OJ back to square one.  I think was more of a celebrity villain, than a sports villain.  He was somewhat of a squeaky clean guy during his playing days.
Yup

What about Manny & A-Rod?  And Frank McCourt, too?

John McEnroe, Kobe, and Lebron are not vile.  But Serena is, at least this week.  And Bobby Knight will win this game, if I have my way.  Although, OJ Simpson could also win if I have my way.

I still think that Manny, A-Rod, and Frank McCourt belong on this list.  Jamie McCourt should be on the list, too.

John McEnroe (18)
Serena Williams (20)
Lebron James (16)
Kobe Bryant (22)
Andrew Bynum (20)
Elizabeth Lambert (20)
Mike Tyson (22)
Ty Cobb (20)
Dennis Rodman (20)
Ulf Samuelsson (24)
Paul O'Neill (16)
John Rocker (20)
Woody Hayes (20)
Shooter McGavin (18)
Ernie McCracken   (16)
Barry Bonds (22)
Bobby Knight (20)
Al Davis (20)
OJ Simpson (22)
Tonya Harding (22)
Robert Irsay (20)
Rosie Ruiz (20)

I'd like to nominate Rae Carruth. I looked and didn't see him.

I'd also like to nominate Javarris Crittenden.  Or are those guys more like real life villains?

I also got a thing against guys that can't name their kids or have like 20 of them

This seems like a good time to share this.

According to a book from my children's library in 488BC Astylos won the Olympic race for his home town of Croton. His town gave him a statue and a house.

So Syracuse offered him a better deal and he jumped ship.

In response Croton knocked down his statue and made his house the jail.

So there was a Lebron before Lebron. No word on what Astylos tweeted.

I would have also included:

Tiger Woods
A-Rod
Manny R
Frank McCourt  (even though I think Jamie is shafting him)
Jamie McCourt
David Stern
Stefan Marbury
Isaiah Thomas
James L. Dolan
Tim Donaghy
Pete Rose (even though I liked him as a player)
Billy Martin  (even though...)
George Steinbrenner
George O'Leary
Rasheed Wallace (Sheed) (even though...)
Kendrik Perkins (Perk)  (even though...)
David Stern
Bud Selig
Jerry Richardson
Mark Cuban (even though I respect him)
David Kahn
Howard Cosell  (even though...)

Allow me to give you your first Tommy Point.  Did you mean to include Stern twice? I like the way you put some people here that could be villains or heroes

Wow, I was expecting the sound of crickets. Thanks to everyone.

I'm impressed that folks are getting the spirit of this. It's not just about voting, but yes, feel free to let loose with comments.

I think there is a difference between sports villains and those we love or hate to hate. Howard Cosell is a perfect example. Jimmy the Greek or Rick Barry, however, could be included for making racist comments.

Tough decisons are going to have to be made. I'll run down all the suggestions and amend the list accordingly.

Finkel- Knight and Hayes have to stay. You can do all you can to vote them off the island. To mimic a somewhat famous quote,  "In this game every vote will count and every vote will be counted."

Someone has to be Judge Wapner. Hopefully this game goes well and inspires someone to start another one with a different topic. It's like when you play cards. The person dealing selects the game and the rules.

Redz, I hear you on the Juice. He was as squeaky clean as they were until that crazy day with the slow police chase. I'll say this, if OJ had gotten the wrongful death suit dismissed, legally I might be obligated to drop him. My hands are tied.

Finkel, the Hanson Brothers is a good suggestion, but we already have two made up names. Sorry. (on edit- because I have disallowed the Hanson Brothers, I will also take off McCracken and McGavin.)

Mool- If we start suggesting Manny, then where do we draw the line? The guy helped bust the Curse of the Bambino. Does Schilldog thus end up on the list? Foulkie too for calling us Johnny from Burger King? Heck, I'd love to put Tony Massarotti on the list for calling us yahoos.

Jamie McCourt might be a good choice, but I don't know much about that story. I know you blogged on it. Nothing personal.

Thirstyboots- Yeah, I thought of Michael Vick, but sometimes people deserve a fresh start. But the law is the law, so I'll add him to the list.

Eja117- Rae Carruth is added. Javarris Crittenden will not be. He's innocent until proven guilty. I know he was involved with that Gilbert Arenas thing, but do you want Delonte on the list too? I doubt it. As for Astylos, he is in the clear due to the statue of limitations running out. That wasn't a typo either.

Mool- You're lucky I have no life and have the time to run through your suggestions. Good thing I watched a lot of Judge Judy, Wapner, Joe Brown, and Mills Lane. Otherwise, I'd be way in over my head.

Additions: David Stern, Isiah Thomas, Not Dolan, a better choice would be the Clippers owner. Definitely not Mark Cuban. He's not a villain. I'm also going to see if any on the list should be taken off. Like Lebron is off the list. On the list- Tim Donaghy, George Steinbrenner, Instead of Jerry Richardson, we'll add Marge Schott.

Eja117- Yes, this list needs to keep its focus. I will run through my initial choices and see who is ripe for amnesty.

off the list- Andrew Bynum because he only messed up once. Rodman stays because he kicked the reporter you know where. Paul O'Neill is off the list. Being a cry baby is different from being a villain. I guess that means amnesty for John McEnroe and Serena too. That'll do it.

Here is the revised and final list with the current vote total:
(on edit again- based on thirstyboots18 later comment, Michael Vick has been cut a break. He paid his debt to society.)

Marge Schott (20)
Kobe Bryant (22)
Rae Carruth (20)
Elizabeth Lambert (20)
Mike Tyson (22)
Ty Cobb (20)
Dennis Rodman (20)
Ulf Samuelsson (24)
John Rocker (20)
Woody Hayes (20)
Barry Bonds (22)
Bobby Knight (20)
Al Davis (20)
OJ Simpson (22)
Tonya Harding (22)
Robert Irsay (20)
Rosie Ruiz (20)
David Stern (20)
Isiah Thomas (20)
Tim Donaghy (20)
George Steinbrenner (20)

And here are my added votes.

Marge Schott (20)
Kobe Bryant (22)
Rae Carruth (20)
Elizabeth Lambert (22)
Mike Tyson (22)
Ty Cobb (22)
Dennis Rodman (18)
Ulf Samuelsson (26)
John Rocker (20)
Woody Hayes (20)
Barry Bonds (22)
Bobby Knight (20)
Al Davis (18)
OJ Simpson (22)
Tonya Harding (22)
Robert Irsay (18)
Rosie Ruiz (20)
David Stern (20)
Isiah Thomas (20)
Tim Donaghy (20)
George Steinbrenner (20)

I probably misunderstood because of the thread title....I was thinking more villains who rehabilitated themselves and returned returned to their game (survived their  villainhood,  ;) .)  I agree that Michael Vick has earned a pardon for good behavior.  I hope that he  now "gets it".  He is supremely talented and it would have been a shame to lose that...

Two others who have been mentioned and I agree with on those terms are Jimmy Conners and John McEnroe.
