  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I'll throw one other idea out there:

Could be challenging, but a fun exercise none-the-less, NBA draft using current contracts and a salary cap (no rookie contracts).

Whaddya mean no rookie contract? It is just another thing that helps define the value of the player.

The thing I wonder is how do you handle FA's.

I think it hurts the the exercise because it would make younger players exceedingly more valuable.

Derek Rose is scheduled to make under 7 mil this year.

EDIT: to be clear, I'm suggesting that no one under a rookie contract would be eligible.

Give players on rookie contracts + free agents a realistic monetary value.

Put together a rough draft of their contract values + then allow some discussion from anyone participating in the draft prior to final figures.

For example, Derrick Rose (an easy one) is a max contract player.

I think while it's a nice idea, that may over complicate things.

If people are looking for a change of pace, how about a no-All-Stars draft?  I think we'd end up with some unbelievably competitive teams.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I've been having this idea about a buy in value draft.

Each teams starts with $60,000 to build their team through a draft. Draft determined by lottery and is snaked. All current players in the NBA are available and have values:

If a player has:

Been an All-NBA player in the last 5 years they are valued at $10,000

Been an All-Star or All-Defense player in the last 5 years they are valued at $8,000

Averaged more than 20 PPG, or 10 RPG, or 2 BPG or 2 SPG and haven't been any of the above(All-NBA, All-Star, All-Defense) in the last 5 years they are valued at $6,000

Averaged more than 50 games started for at least 3 of the last 5 years and are none of the above they are valued at $4000

Played in more than 50 games per year for at least 3 of the past 5 years and are none of the above they are valued at $2000

All other vets are valued at $1000

Is a rookie draft top 5 $5000, 6-10 $2500, 11-20 $1500 later than 20 or undrafted $1000

So the goal is to draft and build a team while being under a budget. Have no idea how trades would work. Maybe no trades so it makes commissioner work minimal.

Anyway, just an idea.

So LeBron would cost the same as Tracy McGrady?

Maybe make it the last 3 years instead of 5. And 2 of 3 instead of 3 of 5 for the later options.

I know it needs some ironing out.

Maybe $10000 for an All-NBA player in the last 3 years.

I think it sounds great. Big fan of this idea or a draft like this.

But it gives you the feel of having a draft with salaries without having to be held hostage to what current players contracts are but what their relative worth is based on recent accomplishments.

Who's idea of 2 of the last 3 years is good too.
