Nice picks today ... very thoughtful as to pairing compatible players to maximize potential. Congrats to all on a great second round, and a TP to IP for the hard work. Wish I could be around for more of the chat, but we've been right out straight, and still short-handed, (along with breaking in two new Interns). The management for the "South Beach Samurai" are looking forward to round three! :)

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Why Andrew Bogut and Amar'e Stoudemire are the makings of the best frontline in the NBA:

1) Strength, size, and athleticism: Bogut is among the biggest and strongest centers in the NBA, and Amar'e is among the biggest and strongest PF's in the NBA. On top of that, both Amar'e and Bogut are excellent athletes for their respective positions.

There are few, if any, centers in the NBA that can push around Andrew Bogut, just like there are few, if any power forwards that can match Amar'e's size and athleticism.

2) Scoring balance: Amar'e Stoudemire is the best scoring power forward in basketball. I know what you're thinking..."Oh, but isn't Dirk better because he can shoot a 3pt shot??"

NO! HE'S NOT!

Amar'e was the highest scoring power forward this year, he had the sixth highest field goal attempts per game of any position (and shot a better % than anyone who shot more than him), and on top of that he played on a team which required him to be 'the man' on virtually every single possession. He can score from outside with a very underrated jumpshot (better than Kevin Garnett's), and he can score inside with an array of post moves and pure athletic prowess.

Which is good, because Andrew Bogut is not what you would call refined in the post. A 7ft behemoth from Australia (so you know he's tough), he's a very effective scorer inside, using a simple but effective arsenal of up and unders and baby hooks, as well as an adequately effective short range jumper.

Between the two of them, they've got the block on lockdown.

The Balance: Amar'e Stoudemire is an offensively oriented player. I'm not willing to say he's 'bad' at defense unconditionally, but he's hardly elite. He's also not a great rebounder. Andrew Bogut is a defensively oriented player.

I'm not going to say offensively he's 'bad', but his strengths mirror many of Amar'e's weaknesses, and the opposite is also true, in that Amar'e mirrors a lot of Bogut's strengths. Amar'e isn't a particularly strong rebounder (Amar'e is slightly better than Dirk Nowitzki at getting ze rebounds), but Bogut is a strong rebounder. Amar'e isn't a very good passer, but Bogut is one of the best passing centers in the NBA. Bogut isn't good when asked to consistently create his own shot, and Amar'e is one of the best shot creators (among forwards) in the league.

More to come, when I decide to stop playing NBA2k.

Monta Ellis is one of the best scorers in the NBA. Nobody can argue that with you.

on Monta Ellis

it’s notable because it was his DEFENSE that was the most important factor.

I thought Ellis destroyed xx Superstar. Just ate him up. DEFENSIVELY.

I put that in all-caps because… well, just because Ellis has not exactly done this in many seasons..but this season it changes

He made it clear he thinks he’s a better defensive player than his reputation–and I have to be clear, I have agreed with that reputation and written that many times.

Tonight, Ellis was all over ssuperstar. Moving his feet, getting into superstars’s chest, swiping at the ball, shoving him on the low post, all in superstars’s head, if you ask me.

A dominant, dominant effort.

Ellis had 6 steals, but that wasn’t the only important stat. It was this: superstar, 6 for 17 shooting, 17 points(and 3 turnovers) in 38 minutes.

(And superstars team shooting just 41.8% from the field, largely because the superstars team seemed lulled by all their mismatches and then got frustrated when their post-game fizzled–like it always does vs. the Warriors at Oracle.)

Ellis’ 34 points on 13-of-28 shooting, and 8 assists (in all 48 minutes) was just the icing on the cake.

Tremendous game. He looked very happy afterwards. Rip me all you want for saying he and the Warriors are in for a separation.

I still think this is a major issue.

Tonight, it was not.  And if he keeps playing like this, the issues might go away–that’s what spectacular play can do… and victories, too.

—-MONTA ELLIS, post-game gaggle (with several reporters)/

-Q: Can you talk about your defense against superstar?

-ELLIS: I just did what coach Nelson asked us to do. Goad him, crowd him, play to his strength. He likes to go left so I had that cut off.

Really, I was more energetic than anything and really wanted to go out and get this win and I knew he was a big key for them to even have a chance of winning.

So I just took him out of the game and the rest of our players stuck with the gameplan and did what they needed to do with their players. We got out and ran and won the game.

-Q: How much do you relish a match-up like that defensively?

-ELLIS: You know, I could do that day-in, day-out. It’s just… it was great, getting out, getting steals, getting us running, getting everybody involved in the game. It was just a fun game.

That’s what we’ve been missing and it felt good.

-Q: Your coach said he planned a double-team against superstar but he took it off because you were playing him so well. What does that mean to you?

-ELLIS: It means a lot. Just getting my opportunity to play players. They’ll probably score on me every once in a while, but I guarantee you that I’ll make them miss more shots than they make.

Just let me play them. That was a good thing for us, anyway, because they have so many shooters. In the first quarter, that’s what they were doing—passing it out, getting it to the open shooters and they were hitting the open shots.

Just let me play him and see how it goes and that’s what he did.

-Q: There’s so much focus on your offense. Do you think your defense gets overlooked?

-ELLIS: It definitely gets overlooked. I hear people saying that Monta can’t play defense, this and that.

But if you look at it, if you just go back and look at all the tapes, Monta really don’t get burned like people think he does.

I go out and do whatever I need to do.

-Q: You said after that player was traded that it’s not up to you to step into that void. But at some point were you doing that tonight?

-ELLIS: You could say that. On the defensive end, getting everybody involved, out there, leading players, making plays for others… you could say that.

-Q: Are you comfortable doing that?

-ELLIS: I’m cool with it.

-Q: Does this game make a statement that it’s a teamP

-ELLIS: This game?

-Q: Yes.

-ELLIS: I thought in training camp they said it was my team. Hey, just got to do what we’ve got to do as a team and that’s what we did tonight. We went and played as a team, played as a unit. Everybody was helping everybody, everybody was making plays for each other. And that’s how we won the ballgame.

-Q: Is this game going to make everybody else around the country realize it’s  a team?

-ELLIS: I don’t know. That’s a question you’ve got to ask everybody else. But if that’s what people want to say, it’s my team, hey, it’s my team or a team. But I’ve got soldiers next to me who are ready to go with me and we’re all going to put it together and make this one big happy family.

-Q: Is it a happy family now?

-ELLIS: Yeah. Ain’t no problems over here.

Love the guy  ;D

Doesn't Wade and Iggy play the same position? Kinda hard to be so great defensively as a team when your two players play the same position

NBA.com has him listed as a forward/Guard.
