He'd sign with Bulls, Heat, Lakers, even the Mavs before signing with the Celtics.  Honestly, we don't need Carter all that much.  Green should get most of the extra wing minutes next year, and Delonte / Avery should pick up the rest.  We need scoring and rebounding in the front court.
... And alll are bigs went down last year & we where screwed. I say sign even if we are just blocking!!!

Yes, sign him.

The addition of him gives the Celtics more flexibility to explore trades using Green to get some size.

Carter gives the Celtics some needed offensive firepower off the bench.  He has the skills to play both SF and SG.  (a little PG as well since he did that in NJ when Kidd went to the bench)

Then, sign Daniels as well to be the other swing man.  That would give Doc an offensive and defensive swing off the bench.

I don't think I'm at all ready to see Vince Carter player pg for the Celts. It would be like a surreal nightmare.

Not in place of Rondo, no.

But it does give the bench another ball handler.

Vince Carter is on my list of players I would never want to see in Green. Guy is a born loser who is all about his stats and once admitted to purposely quitting on his team to drive his value down and force a trade out of Toronto.

No thanks to losers like that on this team.

The Celtics can't afford Carter without giving up 2012 cap space as he will expect more than a 1 year MLE. So it is not worth it.

If a vet SG is the target, Michael Redd is probably a better choice money and maybe talent wise. Even with the injury history.

SG is not a need at this point, but a luxury.

It would be nice to add Vince Carter to the Cs, but I just dont see it happening because the Cs need to use their MLE (assuming such a thing will still exist) to sign a big man, which is a pressing need.
Celtics fan for life.

I've got no interest in Vince Carter.  He just never struck me as a guy who was willing to sacrifice in order to help his teams win, and I don't have much interest in watching him during the decline years of his career.

I actually think this is a poor move by the Suns.

Not that they should keep Carter. But his contract isn't fully guaranteed next year (only $4 mil owed if released before June 30). As such, he'd be a decent trade chip on draft night. The Suns could shop that contract to gain a decent pick or prospects from another team looking to shed payroll.

Instead, the Suns (Robert Sarver) are happy to buy out Carter to save money. They won't get under the cap by doing this, so it won't help improve the team at all.

I agree that it doesn't make a ton of sense to do this until the deadline, but my guess is that the Suns have at least done some diligence, and haven't been impressed by the offers they're getting.

I could see the end of his career going like Iverson's.... expecting to be wanted like he was when he was younger but settling on a bench spot for a lottery team.

Two teams you would expect him to fit, Dallas and Chicago, probably wouldn't take him even though they have needs at the 2.  Dallas likes ball movement and that's not his game.  Chicago likes defense and that is definitely not his game.

I guess if he went to one of those two teams and bought in he could possibly redefine his career, but I don't see that happening.

For the MLE, it'd be a questionable move when we're in such dire need for big men.  And though we could trade Green if we signed Carter, we wouldn't exactly be in the driver's seat.  Teams could simply just try to sign Green if they really wanted him; furthermore, in a trade, teams could attempt to rip us off for Green knowing how desperately we'd likely need a backup 5 with the MLE off the table.

For the minimum, it'd be a no-brainer.  Sure, he has his flaws, but the guy can still play.  And for a team that had the trouble scoring the basketball when the starters went to the bench, he'd go a long way in helping in that department.

Hi, I'm a Celtics fan from Israel.
I just read that Carter is about to be bought out by the Suns.
Although I don't think he's an impact player as he's tagged to be, maybe he could add experience from the bench at the SG, behind Ray.
If he'll sign for a minimal contract, it could be a nice addition.
Thoughts?

TP for your first post :)

I think he would be a nice addition for the minimum, yes.  I don't think he'll sign here for the minimum though.  As others have said, I think Chicago among other places would be a more preferable place for him to play.

I would take him. It would have to be for cheap. in between vet min and mle. Think he would be a good 6th man for this team.

SG is not a need at this point, but a luxury.

I'd have to disagree with that.  The odds of Ray Allen playing as well next season as he did this past season have to be less than 50/50.  On the other hand, the odds of him struggling again in the playoffs are probably better than 50/50.  At the very least, there's no way this Celtics team is going to win a title playing Ray 40 minutes a game in the playoffs and since Ray is Doc's binky, the only way to avoid that is to give Doc somebody like Carter where he basically HAS to play him.

Yeah, I think every position is a need at this point.  Center may be a bigger need, but at the moment we have no bench.  I would take Carter, if he wants to come off the bench, play 20 minutes and be a selfish scorer, I have absolutely no issue with that.  It's actually a need of ours.  I know a lot of people on the board wanted Jamal Crawford, but I think they're very similar players at this point in their careers.  If we got either one, we'd be lucky.
do it
