It's fascinating. Fans were up in arms about Shaq and JO never being healthy. And now they want to sign Greg Oden...  ::)

Its funny though when you compare accross sports for example.  Theo Epstein and the sox make these kinds of moves all the time, the low risk high reward moves.  Its just tough to do them in a sport with a cap, makes it medium to high risk to high reward.
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

No kidding. At least with Shaq and JO, those guys had a track record of sustained success at points of their career (Shaq being dominant for 12 plus years).

Even if Oden is healthy, do we really even know what this guy is made of?

With Portland's GM fired this is definitely possible. Let's do a pros and cons:
+ He has very little mileage and is 23. He has barely played a full season.
- His knees.
+ He is still very young though. Maybe if they patched his knees up enough...
- His knees.
+ Let's consider the other options. Camby...too expensive. Dalembert...nope. Their draft picks are fairly limited and the centers would all be snatched. Everything is either too expensive or too useless. Oden is the best there is. Everybody's dreaming of Dwight Howard in green in 2012. This would involve them blowing up their roster completely to even have a chance.
- His knees.

[dang] knees. Can they get Oden by just shedding Carlos Arroyo, Pavlovic, Troy Murphy and the O'Neals? Greg Oden with Krstic as backup is very formidable.

Go for it.

Just make sure you over pay and steal the Suns medical and training staff.  They do a great job with players with long injury issues.

I have a theory that Oden is really 43, not 23.  That would explain why he looks so old and his gimpy knees.   ;)

Under the current CBA, a team will offer Oden 3 yrs, 24 million if not more.  He is worth the risk for a lot of teams, because the reward could be tremendous.  There is a reason he was picked ahead of Durant even with the injury concerns.  Oden, if healthy is a game changing center.  He is that good.  The odds of him being healthy are of course small, but if he is, he is a World Series game 7 bottom of the 9th,  2 out, grand slam when trailing by 3.  He can be that good.

Portland also realizes this, so he won't come cheap in a sign and trade.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I was really psyched about the Celtics before. If they get Oden, I'd be really, really excited. Please do it! You owe it to us for trading away Perk.

If all goes well and they keep the core and manage to snatch Oden and get him to be somewhat healthy, my mind would be blown...

...imagine Rondo, Von Wafer and Jeff Green in the open court. Nothing can guard them. They will also be the most explosive core in the NBA...

...Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett fresh off the bench during crunch time. Three of the leagues best closers...

...we have Delonte West, a complete change in pace from Rondo...

...now we might get Oden, who would probably have either Jermaine O'Neal or Krstic as a backup (they won't trade both of them from the looks of it)...

Good luck to the rest of the NBA. This is one of the most solid teams ever.

We are in no position not to take a chance. As long as it doesn't kill our cap in 2012 then we have to go for it. If we are not blowing up the core then we have to go all in.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
What is the max we could offer him?
I mean surely he's gonna go for more than the minimum.
How much could we really afford to gamble on him?

The reason I like the Oden gamble is because it gives us a huge edge inside over Miami.

Slow the game down when we want to and going inside out with him is like a cheaper/riskier version of getting Dwight Howard.
Defensive bigs for us in KG +Oden would be the best defensive big tandem in the NBA.

Is he ready to go our still out for a few months?
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

If Oden is fully healthy then him and Rondo is absolutely a solid core.  Oden can be that good.

Certainly possible, though I think he still has a decent chance to be Shaq healthy, i.e. 65 games a year and ready for the playoffs.

The max we could offer him if he is an unrestricted free agent is the full MLE (if Portland doesn't make the qualifying offer). If they do make the qualifying offer we would need to trade for him, so his contract would depend on who we traded him for.

I think due to his health risks he could be obtained for the assets we have that's to say draft picks. Being around Shaq, JO and KG would really help his career.
