Best bench players by position?

C - Dave Cowens
PF - undecided
SF - Tracy McGrady
SG - Dave Thompson
PG - undecided

The talent at small forward is pretty amazing -- McGrady, Grant Hill, Bernard King, Carmelo Anthony, Dennis Rodman, Billy Cunningham ... M.Aguirre, A.English.

Small forward and the center position seem to have the most depth in talent off the bench.

Sixers have Cousy as their backup. Tough to beat that.

I'm not sure I rate an older B.Cousy so highly.

Things that are bothering me - (1) scoring efficiency, Cousy ranks 51st of 78 players who played 500 or more minutes that season in TS% (2) His rebounding numbers look below average (3) not sure he can matchup defensively against bigger players.

I would rate his passing as exceptional still. Plus, he doesn't dominate the ball which I love.

Earl Monroe has to be up there as far as best backup guard.

Prime Sheed off the bench is pretty ridiculous too.  Are there any other elite defenders and low-post players that are good at shooting 3s and can play both PF and C?

I'm gonna have to finally look at other teams' benches now.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I'll confess my own ignorance, why not?

I like Penny Hardaway after him, if you consider him a PG.

Edited my post just a few seconds ago to include reasons:

Spencer Haywood is pretty nasty off the bench. Oh and you have to give props to Fat Lever (like Rondo, only he could shoot).

Aside from Monroe, I'd probably consider the other Jesus to be the best guard off the bench.

After that, I'm gonna have to say AI (even though the Celtics didn't deem him worthy to even make their rotation).  A lot of people might not like that, but in a universe where he was somehow able to play with a second unit, that talent and firepower would be unstoppable.

Sheed wasn't on my radar. I had him listed at backup center and there are just better players available there. He'd be amongst the best at PF though. Nice.

Earl Monroe was in my top three at PG at first glance along with Penny and B-Roy ... I am partial to those players because I like guards with good size who can play both backcourt positions and have all-round games.

Best bench players by position?

C - Dave Cowens
PF - undecided (Kemp? B.Jones? S.Haywood -- didn't see any games of his while in his prime)
SF - Tracy McGrady
SG - Dave Thompson
PG - undecided (I like big guards so leaning towards B-Roy or Penny)

The talent at small forward is pretty amazing -- McGrady, Grant Hill, Bernard King, Carmelo Anthony, Dennis Rodman, Billy Cunningham ... M.Aguirre, A.English.

I like Paul Silas or Amare at the backup 4

Or Gail Goodrich, the leading scorer on a title team that had Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain.

He didn't offer a whole lot else though -- defense, rebounding or passing.

What's everyones thoughts on Gasol in this exercise?

I think as PF he's physical and fast enough to survive, and his passing and shooting skills would be a great asset in this format.

I got him as the most skilled offensive backup center and second best overall offensive center to Amare Stoudemire who is a nightmare to matchup against as an undersized center.

Although, I'm not really sure how to judge Walt Bellamy and his prolific season.

I think Pau Gasol will be great as a PF alongside Bill Walton. Those two will be the best passing big man duo in the game. Throw in Magic and J.West. Maybe Durant. Offensive powerhouse of a lineup.
