Yet another reason I'm hoping we don't "blow it up".  I like Doc coaching a contending team, but as the coach of a rebuilding franchise he drove me batty.

Yeah.  I didn't pay a lot of attention to the team prior to '07-'08 (yeah, I'm one of THOSE), but I imagine his reluctance to play young players, especially rookies, has to have been extremely frustrating.

He likes to stick with players he knows well, and that's bad for a team that wants to be shuffling around pieces, trying out different lineups, and developing young players until they find something that really works.

I actually like Doc as a developmental coach. Pre-big 3, he had this team playing hard competitive basketball even when they all knew the season was a lost cause.

The team may have played hard for Doc, but they weren't all that competitive.  Much like how a lot of Phil Jackson's stuff wouldn't work with a young, rebuilding team, Doc's weaknesses in game management are exaggerated and his strengths diminished in a rebuilding situation.

Mike

What coaches are so great during a "rebuilding situation"?

I honestly can't think of any. Who is the perfect coach for rebuilding? What does that coach bring us? 5 more wins and a 8th seed? At that point who really cares.

We are not going through a total blow up and building, though.  We have enough pieces left to attract some goodplayers, especially if they think the big three is willing to come off the bench and help them win a championship.

(I'm not even sure I buy that yet, but it is my hope, I think that would be a historic bench!

Really??  Pierce,  before Rivers and pre-Garnett/Allen, was a solid to very good defender. Captain Pierce sleepwalked defensively for Rivers pre-Garnett.  Basketball is about playing on two ends of the court.  The defense during those years made the Washington Generals defense look like the NBA all-defensive team.  It regressed in each of Rivers' years pre-Thibodeau.  Garnett would have only made Rivers' scrambling blitzing scheme only marginally better.

We had to gut the team and draft picks to get Garnett and Allen.  Had the Celtics been coached by a "developmental" coach, some of those assets would still be with us.

When you say we had to "gut the team" you mean trade most of what we had aside from our best player and 2 of our 3 best young players?

The reason we won the title is because we acquired to stars without having to gut the team.

I think this is great news! I was not the biggest of Doc fans in the beginning of his tenure with us but he has definitely won me over. Of course there are things he can do to improve going forward but that is another story. ;D

The bottom-line is that by him agreeing to stay for another half of decade, it sends the message loud and clear to current and future players, that Boston is not only a place he loves and wants to stay, but the atmosphere here is and will be, one of passion, excitement, competitiveness, and title chasing. If you want to compete for a title, play for a players coach and become part of a tradition that is unmatched in all of basketball, come join Doc in Boston and let him lead you to the promised land!

Funny, but I didn't even realize we had a team to "gut".

When Doc first started here, we focused a lot on offense.

We encouraged ball movement and sharing and Pierce kinda took issue with that earlier on.

Now we focus too much on defense and our offense is struggling.

We need to find the right balance between the two.

Mainly for my own sanity, I am going to assume Doc only signed this because Danny has an incredible plan to keep this team contending for the foreseeable future, and there is no "blow up" in sight.

I agree. Doc and Danny must know something the rest of us don't.

Signing for 5 years contract means that this team will continue like 4 past year, being part of a "cpntinuation" project. Seems positive
