Perk importance in a game will never be defined by his numbers. His defense, leadership, and the other things he does to help his teammates won't show up in a box score. He boxes out, sets picks, tips out rebounds to teammates. He's still doing all that. He doesn't have all of his mobility or lift back and that will probably take till next year as he is still getting back from the injury.
This is remarkably similar to what Green fans argue when defending him. "His numbers don't tell the whole story, needs more time to get into the system", etc. I don't buy into that either way.
Perk's numbers in Boston did tell a lot of the story, when he was playing very well in the first half of 2009-2010 season, his PER was high, his TS% was ridiculously high, his rebounding numbers were up (not his rebounding impact), and the team's defensive numbers were better with him in the game than him out. When he trailed off last year (after reportedly some normal wear and tear type injuries) everything except the D started to drop.
He should still be high efficiency (even with low utilization) plus getting rebounds (and blocks) and making the D better if playing well. Those things DO show up in the box score (or at least the sabremetric box score.)
Brendan, I think we should have a ongoing thread regarding Perks numbers in its entirety.
People want to chime in on what Perk would do here if he was still a Celtic. What about what the Celtics did for him ? Playing with the core 4 is often overlooked, and it shouldn't be. Lining up next to KG is a blessing, and shouldn't be overlooked as well.
Since he's been in OKC, he's posting his worst stats in the 5 years he's been in the playoffs. ORtg, DRtg, WS/48, BLK%, eFG%, PER, etc. Only 1 round of course. 5 games. Lets give him a break with that, but if the poor performances continue, it will start getting clearer and clearer.
During the regular season in OKC, he's posted his worst numbers overall since his first two years in the league !
Let's be fair now, he's coming off a bad knee and surgery. Plus, a new system.
But is he missing the support he had here with superior players ? Even more perhaps than what he dished out ?
Time will tell.
