Kobe fined $100,000 by Stern for what he said!

I'm glad they made an example of him.

Quite a large fine....but a drop in the ocean for a guy who is paid that well.

Fines should be worked out as a percentage of a players pay.

how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck was chris bosh?

Brief explanation:  One of the South Park kids gets caught telling an annoying biker that he was a "F-Bomb."  Which starts a media crazy freak show about this exact topic.  The kids point was that he has nothing against homosexuals, but this annoying biker is still a F-Bomb.  It goes to court and the kids explain there are homosexual F-Bombs and dumbasses who can still be called F-Bombs.  Meaning the kids definition was that the Biker was a dumbass not a homosexual **** or a gathering of sticks.

I saw that episode.  It was funnier when Chris Rock did it with the N-word 15 years ago.  People thought that gave them an excuse to use that word too.  Didn't work out well.

Point is context means everything in language.  So you can remove all N-Bombs and F-Bombs and retard and whatever from polite society, but that will do nothing to stop the ignorance.  I personally don't care what people say, call me, or call others.  Usually people who uses these terms are not educated.

Isn't part of context how your words will be taken, not just how they're meant?  Communication is not a one-way street.  If you're in a group of people who are fine with using these terms, that's between you and them as far as I'm concerned.  In a more public setting you have to be aware of how your words will be taken, and adjust to that new context.

And of course ignorance will always exist, but "people will never be perfect" is a pretty unrealistic standard to hold something to.  By that rationale it's pretty much pointless to ever try to change anything.

um he might have been using the "South Park" definition for the F-bomb.  Watch last season's South Park where they delved into the racially insensitive definition of the F-bomb v. how everyone else uses the F-Bomb.

While I do not like sticking up for Kobe, I doubt he meant the homophobic version.
I love South Park, but that is total total bs.

I don't think he meant a small bundle of sticks.

This would be like if a white guy got caught calling a ref the n word and people were like "I don't think he meant it racially. He probably meant it endearingly. Kinda like in Huck Finn. Everyone loves N*@@#$ Jim.  That guy is our best friend.  Or maybe he just meant it in the Ron Dellums way.  You know. Like a disadvantaged class of people"

Personally I think the league has to weigh off the problem of being Thought Police with the problem of the slippery slope. If you allow this you have to allow almost anything and suddenly you're not really all that different from that all white league we talked about last year.  Remember that league? The one dedicated to a more pure form of basketball for a different cliental?

You never watched the South Park episode?  If you did you would know exactly what I meant.

The point of the show was to examine the words we use and the crazy people who want to take these words and make more of what they mean in common vernacular.
I'm sure it was very funny and raised many good points, and they were still wrong. You can't just explain away all the hate speech in the world, even if people make too much of it

The show was completely accurate in how people use the word.  In fact the funniest part was when the homosexual community, fed up with the bikers, started a "gays against f^gs!" rally lol.

This is ridiculous.

So the next time I see an athlete say God *&^% are they going to get fined because that is offensive to many Christians?

not hate speech or a verbal assault. There's a difference.

A closer analogy, would be the next time an athlete calls someone a "f$cking Jew", and yes...I think should that occur, they will likely get fined

who cares.  I mean really.

A lot of people, many of which are extremely offended by the use of the word Kobe said.

Not to pick on you cuz it happens ALL the time, but isn't 'who cares?' worse of a post then calling people a bunch of haters at this point?

Angryguy. I see what you're saying but at some point you have to draw a line.  Otherwise you might as well have the most popular people on TV going around just saying stuff every time they get upset like "You fudging fat ugly fa@@oty ni@@er beotch!" and it's ok.

I don't want my kid talking like that under just about any circumstances even if I have in my life.  I'm extremely happy there was no video camera around when I did.

Plus it's not like Kobe is some inner city uneducated guy that is going back to his cultural roots speaking this way.  The guy speaks fluent Italian. He can express himself just fine.  He has no excuse if you understand what I'm saying.

Bottom line is at this point in his life the word - in any shape, way or form - shouldn't be in his vocabulary

I do get what you're saying. But as I was saying yesterday, why does that certain group get the line drawn after them? I don't want my son going around saying GD and the like no more than I or you would want them going around saying what you mentioned. Many Christians are offended by taking the Gods name in vain, but if they complained they would get laughed at and told to sit down.
There is also a difference between racial slurs and what Kobe said imo.

What I see is a different set of rules for different groups of people.

The NBA has wide discretion to do what they feel they need to do to keep the game marketable - and I'm not really interested in it.

That Kobe said that particular word is not really more or less interesting than if he said any other offensive words - as someone said KG drops N Bombs galore - which is the sine qua non of epitaphs, yet it's allowed. Is it because he's black? Or because the NBA doesn't fear losing the black audience? So if Kobe were gay would we overlook it?

Personally I don't care if language offends you until the standard is universally applied - if rappers are allowed to use the N word, then I'm not going to get worked up when anyone does. And if that word is allowed, I don't see why the much more mild (in my opinion) words shouldn't be as well. (Side note - depending on when you use that word, I may immediately think you are a dumb donkey or hate filled turd, but really your usage of that word just saved me the time of finding that out the long way.)

And yes I think everyone gets offended too easily, there are far too many victim classes, and too many ideas and thoughts that get censored - but it's too far O/T to go into.
