There are too many Celtics who were pretty good players before they came here and then when they get here take huge steps backwards or fall of the map.

Jeff Green is the latest most extreme example. He has gone from future all-star to "who?" in about 40 days.

Before him Nate Robinson went from 6th man of the yearish to a cruddy cruddy pg.

Rasheed Wallace went from a very productive big man to a very unproductive big man, except at jacking up horrid 3s until FINALLY he had a good 3 and a half games when it was most needed. Big whoop.

Shaq was doing fine till he dropped off the Earth and onto a milk carton due to injury

Jermaine O'Neal was before that.

Marquis Daniels before that.

You can say that these guys had minutes reduced or whatever, but these were at positions of need and concern. The playing time was there.

You could say we were a year too late on some of these guys, but what's the excuse for Jeff Green?

The only one I could say beat expectations to me is Krstic.

We have other guys I didn't expect lots out of, but they had every opportunity to step up due to other guys failing and they never did.

Arroyo and West aren't doing much. Neither is Pavlovich.

One would expect to get lucky on one of these guys one of these days and it's not happening.

Uh yeah. Larry Bird came here and they won a ring too I guess. And Bill Russell before that.

This is a classic example of the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy.

Possibly you need to reconsider your evaluation of some of those players prior to coming to the Celts. Also consider injuries.

Nate Robinson, sixth man of the year candidate? Jeff Green, future all-star? Neither of those players ever warranted that kind of praise before they played with the C's.

current roster:

Rajon Rondo, questionable player at Kentucky, blossoms as a top pg until his bff gets traded

Big Baby Davis, afterthought draft pick, becomes solid key player for Celtics

Yes, kg and ray come and win title

Shaq arrives here, still looks superhuman, at worst, in limited minutes

Heck, Nenad doesn't look worse either

Delonte awesome too

I can't fault Danny's thinking this past off-season.  Shaq, JO, Delonte, Wafer, and a returning Nate and Marquis was a good haul.  Sure, there were some gambles in there, and in hindsight I think we've missed Tony, but Danny's reasoning was solid.  Unfortunately, injuries really hurt most of those guys, and Nate never really found his groove here.

I do think Danny miscalculated with the trade, and I think he had a horrible off-season in 2008.  Other than those two missteps, though, he's been solid.

I guess I understand the critique that not a lot of guys have exceeded expectations, but at the same time it's always going to be hard to live up to the expectations of Boston fans seeking championship caliber play.

The one thing I think he did wrong in the off-season was to not get a solid back up at the 3 position. Marquis was solid for about 50 games or so, but really, it seemed inevitable that he wasn't going to make it through a full season.  I guess that was the real gamble there.

Losing Marquis was really what necessitated the Perk for Green and Krstic trade.  What sat worse with me was trading away Semih Erden to make room for Troy Murphy. Yuck!

You also have to consider that the new guys come in to a lesser role for the Celts. Shaq and JO were both second options last year and 4th options this year. Everyone else that comes in has a similar situation.

Erden's only played one game since being traded to Cleveland, and I think Byron Scott wanted to shut him down for the remainder of the season, although I'm unsure of whether he actually did that.

It sucks for Erden, but if he wasn't gonna help the C's in the playoffs, then so be it.

I realize that I may be delusional, but I had high hopes for that Young Turk.

I think that Jeff Green's issues stem from his attitude. He doesn't seem to care about the outcome of our season. I've been seriously unimpressed.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

That's a little harsh - just because he isn't super emotional doesn't mean he doesn't care. Frankly, these kinds of guys are great to have in the playoffs because they don't let the pressure get to them. He has struggled to find his groove here, though, and since he isn't the most aggressive player, he has taken somewhat of a backseat. It doesn't change the fact that he is a very good all-around player who I am sure DOES care.
