You've got to admit, though, all of the stories about Sheed hanging around in Boston are a little odd if he hadn't at least thought about making a comeback. Doesn't he live on the other side of the country?

Maybe Sheed is an attention ****?  Maybe 13-dimensional chess wizard Danny Ainge pays for him to show in Boston occasional to create misdirection about future Celtics plans?

If he really wanted attention he'd get seats behind the Celts bench and scream "ball don't lie!" every time an opponent missed a free throw.

3 open roster spots and 2 injured centers.  If anyone says they wouldn't take Sheed right now they're lying.

I'll take him in a heartbeat.

I think Sheed's had long enough now to put his hand up to play. Time to look elsewhere.

It poses and interesting question though, who would be better for the Celtics in 2011, Leon Powe or Rasheed Wallace?

what kind of shape is sheed in? he was fat last season on a team 4 minutes from a title. highly doubt he has been keeping himself in playing shape...
I think there's about an equal chance of Sheed being in shape as there is of him being out of shape.  You'd be guessing if you said otherwise.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Stephen A. Smith has a story, and he's sticking too it:

Quote
Smith made news recently by speculating that Rasheed Wallace would end his retirement and return to the Celtics. Smith explained that Wallace indicated last June — when the player talked about his retirement — that he would consider returning after the trade deadline this season.

“He was alluding [in June] to coming back once the trading deadline expired if the Celtics needed him, that he would think about it,” Smith said. “And throughout this year, he had been saying one day, he wants to come back, the other day, he doesn’t want to come back. … He was going back and forth throughout the year. One day he wants to come back, another day he doesn’t want to come back. One minute he’s thinking about going to Orlando, the next minute he misses all the boys he was with in Boston last year.

“So, I simply said I think he’s going to end up coming back to Boston, because I believe that Boston is going to be the team that fights the Lakers for the world championship, and I believe that Doc Rivers is the ultimate motivator. And I think if you have an opportunity to play for Doc Rivers for a couple of months, that’s not something that you’re going to turn down. I still believe that. I still believe that Rasheed Wallace is going to come back.”

Link.

In other words, all speculation.

You're being awfully gracious, Coach.

If steven i smith says something I just assume it's completely false.

SAS was a joke when he was employed. What does this guy even do now? I wouldn't listen to a word he says, never did.

With that said, I think if the C's don't bring in a vet big man like Murphy, DA and Doc feel out 'Sheed.

So there is a chance, but it's still no sure thing the C's need him or he wants to play.

We will know by next week, and then the rumors will finally end.

Sheed just got a technical for screaming at his wife and kids and a flagrant foul on the baby sitter...so this rumor may actually be true

Smith has already said this in January, then Ainge (Sheed said he it was in shape) and Rasheed have refused his return, after the trade deadline Sheed said he would not return, remember that Smith was the first to say that on the signing of Lebron to Miami.

Need for Sheed? I think Rasheed would be a great fit, it is better defense and rebounding better than Murphy.

Ive got to agree with the people who say Steven A. Smith is full of crap.  The guy is one of the worst sports "journalist" and is a contributor on Fox News, which takes what little credibility he has and tosses it in the trash.

I would not bet on anything that comes out of SAS's mouth.  Its usually just hyperbole, fantasies and longshots to get tv or radio time.

I'll believe only when I see it. I'd love it, though. I wonder if Sheed could get in shape (maybe Shaq's trainer will start to work with Sheed too), but he defended in the post as good as Perk if not better. The other concern would be his back, it was killing him in the playoffs, and unless something has been done to heal it, the pain would still be there.

If he's healthy, he's the best option to play 10-15 minutes come playoff time.

Sheed's not coming back and even if he did, I'm willing to bet he is nowhere near NBA shape.

I'd be shocked if he's on someone's roster in late April.

How out of shape can you really get, less than one year removed from playing 100+ pro basketball games?

Pretty easily.  Its not too hard with professional athletes.  How many times do we hear about guys showing up at training camps 20 lbs overweight during an offseason (an NBA summer, nevermind almost an entire year)?

Also, consider the standpoint that, with the exception of soccer, professional basketball might be the most cardiovascular straining sport going and its not too farfetched to consider that Sheed might not be anywhere ready for the wear & tear of an NBA game.

This isnt one of us taking a year off and then bouncing back on a playground court to play pickup.  This is the NBA.  Some of the best athletes in the world and Sheed hasn't exactly been known for his training regime in the past.
