Boo Hoo, man, give me a break! I am sorry guys but it's kind of hard for me to feel too sorry for a man who makes 4-5 million dollars a year just because he has to swtich teams! I mean, really, I loved Perk and still do but if you pay me 4.5 million dollars I would have a Lakers tatoo put on my right cheek and wear nothing but Lakers clothing every day of the year.

I can't stand this way of thinking about things when it comes to Pro athletes.  THey are all still human.  Stop hating and being jealous of another man's wealth.

Yes, they're human, but the loyalty stops when the money stops, and sometimes even before then (don't like your team, demand a trade).  Perk seems like a standup guy, but I have a real hard time getting emotional about pro athletes getting traded any more.  Maybe I've become jaded.

Love Perk.  Would give him a nice cheer if I was in the stands when he returns.  I wish no ill of him in the least, but I'm not going to shed a tear.  I'll root for the guys wearing the uniform.  I did it for Perk when he was losing 19 in a row a few years back and I did when they raised a banner in 08.

It was fun Perk, but I'm over it.

I ve heard a lot of times about players being unhappy and emotional after a trade they didn`t persue. But i`ve never heard of player breaking into tears after leaving his favourite team as FA to sign a bigger contract.

Exactly.  And in Perk's case it sounds like he was going to do so at the season's end, leaving the Celtics with no value for him.

Bravo.

The one thing that continues to amaze me as a Midwesterner about Celtics Fan is this expectation - and in some cases, demand - that the club be run as a fan would.

They made Perkins the best offer they could, and he apparently decided that free agency was worth the extra million or so annually. OK, Perk, but don't expect us to let you walk away for nothing.

And it seems to me that I recall a reserve four being villified on this board for walking away for essentially the same amount of money annually, creating a void that year that teamed with KG's injury to torpedo a season. Ask the Captain how much gas he had left in his tank.

Doesn't mean I'm not worried for Perkins. His physical condition worries me - both knees, the shoulder. OKC is so bad defensively that I don't think he can clean all of that up himself if and when he returns to the floor. Not to mention that OKC is replacing two shooters in the lineup with two non-scorers; I imagine Phil Jackson looks at this new lineup and smiles.

Management made the best offer it could, it was refused so they moved on. They got, in my view, amazing value for a distressed asset. It's OK to be loyal to your favorite player. Consider this a friendly request for loyalty to the people who pay the bills, who devliered 17. It's over. Time to move on.

I love Perk. He was one of my favorite players on the team. His work ethic and hard-nosed play are an inspiration to us all.

BUT he and his agent were ready to screw the Celtics if necessary. Danny simply took care of his responsibilities, looking out for the best interests of the franchise. It's a little hypocritical for players to just love their team and talk about how much they want to play there and then also desire to play the field and get the best financial deal available. It's trying to get it both ways and sometimes you have to make a choice. It's like the guy who wants to be with his gf and wants her to be faithful but still wants to play the field. Danny couldn't let Perk walk for nothing and offered him a relatively fair contract. Perk turned it down and that is that. The business side of sports sometimes hurts but that's why Danny gets paid millions per year, to make the tough decisions that need to be made..

Would you sell your mother for 4.5 million?

Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

I was shocked just like everyone else at first but I really dont think this is that sad anymore. He's been sent to a great team in okc who more than a few people (not me) say has a shot at a title now. This is a business and he was gonna leave us anyway. He didnt get sent to the cavs. And i think when our pieces fall and we get the rest of who we want, we can be better than before.

Also that stuff Bill simmons said about 'we would rather loose in 2011 with perk than win with someone else' is pure crap to me.  That makes no sense to me what about all the other guys? But anyway time to move on

Perk will have to stand on his own now. No more Big 3 to hide his lack of skills. It's not his fault entirely he doesn't have a money shot most NBA players have. With the Big 3 hogging who's got time to develop a shot. So we'll see now how he gets exposed. I'm sure there are lots of NBA players out there ready to test him.
He won't have to score in OKC they already have players to do that. If he is not the 4th or 5th option on the court offensively you will have a problem.

But let's keep things in perspective:

Crazy talk. What are you doing on this board?

Looks like just slivers for Perk today. Is he the 3rd option there?
OKC plays to a frantic pace, don't think Perk will be able to keep up with that. Wonder if they will move him eventually.

Like you have pointed, that was a business decision. Perk might not have wanted to play the game, but he allowed his agent to play, of course the outcome didn't please him. I'm sorry for the sadness around the team, but I have nothing against Perk, wish him health and success because he seems like a good honest man.

The most interesting thing, in my opinion, is the example Danny has set, a bit like Bill "Hoodie" Belichick (if you want out, I'll help you). What do you think BBD is thinking about resigning with the team? How much will the Celtics offer him? Well, he wanted to "test the waters" 2 seasons ago and his value around the league wasn't as high as he thought. This summer might be different, but I bet Danny will lowball and invite him to "test the waters" again if he doesn't like the Celtics offer.

Like a hot knife cutting through butter he was cut. Love and hate DA for his coldness but he is exactly an example of how a business is run. Always for the sake of the *team*. Can't live on laurels. It's what have you done for me lately that always counts.

Interesting.  In 7 years Perk has certainly improved, but never developed the reliable 8-10 footer, or a reliable 3-5 foot hook.   BBD, despite shooting more than I'd like him to, has developed a very relaible 8-12 footer, and can even stretch it longer when needed.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
Wonder if he had to bring those shoes down low for that useless dribble before shooting them in the can?
