To preface my post, I am a big Perk fan and have been for a long time. I love his blue collar approach, his aggression and his love for physical play. While I am sad that one of my favorite Celtics was traded, I'm not terribly upset with Danny making this trade.
First, the Celtics played some pretty good basketball without Perkins manning the middle. They were still a good, physical defensive team; with or without Perkins that is this teams identity. He embodied it but there is a subtle difference between embodying qualities and being the inspiration for those qualities.
Second, he was hurt and is hurt again. I credit the guy for staying in shape so he could hit the ground running, but if his knees continue and his productivity was limited moving forward he ends up being another guy eating a roster spot.
Third, this is going to be the first of a number of moves Danny is going to make over the next 18 months to free up cap space for a 2012 signing.
Lastly, the Celtics got the biggest talent in this deal and anytime you get the top talent in a trade things are not as bad as they seem.
However, my optimism is bridled. They are now incredibly dependent on the health of two players who have had trouble consistently finding their way on to the court. After Shaq and JO the C's have Nenad and Baby as their centers, ugh.
So really this is like the Ray Allen trade for me. C's traded DWest and Green for Ray. Again they got the best player in the deal but most of us thought Ray may be the difference between being a 7-8th seed first round exit and being a fringe lottery team. Then the other shoe dropped and all of a sudden it made sense. So I'm expecting another shoe to drop soon.
If the C's go into the playoffs with Shaq playing 15-20 min a C, Kristic playing 15 min a center and Davis playing 10 min at C then I will have a much different outlook.
