I believe Jeff Green is a very above average defender at the 3, especially versus the big wings Boston will face in the playoffs: LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Luol Deng, Hedo Turkoglu, maybe Durant.

This could turn out to be more important than people think. PP and Ray both averaged 39 minutes a game in the playoffs and 40 the year before. If Green could put in some quality minutes at the three PP could slide over to the two at times and both PP and Ray would stay a little fresher as the playoffs go on.

Sorry, but this a bleeding green over reaction. He did not trade away Moses Malone, Kareem, or Patrick Ewing. He traded a career 6pt 6reb over achiever on a team of hall of famers.
Agreed.

Totally agree.  I think people are underestimating the impact this will have on the longevity of the Big 3.  Sort of like the Len Bias theory that Larry and Kevin would have lasted longer if Bias could have taken the minutes and burden off their hands (and back and ankles).

To preface my post, I am a big Perk fan and have been for a long time.  I love his blue collar approach, his aggression and his love for physical play.  While I am sad that one of my favorite Celtics was traded, I'm not terribly upset with Danny making this trade.

First, the Celtics played some pretty good basketball without Perkins manning the middle.  They were still a good, physical defensive team; with or without Perkins that is this teams identity.  He embodied it but there is a subtle difference between embodying qualities and being the inspiration for those qualities.

Second, he was hurt and is hurt again. I credit the guy for staying in shape so he could hit the ground running, but if his knees continue and his productivity was limited moving forward he ends up being another guy eating a roster spot.

Third, this is going to be the first of a number of moves Danny is going to make over the next 18 months to free up cap space for a 2012 signing.

Lastly, the Celtics got the biggest talent in this deal and anytime you get the top talent in a trade things are not as bad as they seem.

However, my optimism is bridled.  They are now incredibly dependent on the health of two players who have had trouble consistently finding their way on to the court.  After Shaq and JO the C's have Nenad and Baby as their centers, ugh.

So really this is like the Ray Allen trade for me.  C's traded DWest and Green for Ray.  Again they got the best player in the deal but most of us thought Ray may be the difference between being a 7-8th seed first round exit and being a fringe lottery team.  Then the other shoe dropped and all of a sudden it made sense.  So I'm expecting another shoe to drop soon.

If the C's go into the playoffs with Shaq playing 15-20 min a C, Kristic playing 15 min a center and Davis playing 10 min at C then I will have a much different outlook.

Great point,

with Deng, Melo, LBJ, etc. this deal definitely makes sense since Green fits in right with them size and length wise.

Just a few things for people to think of:

Perk often didn't play in crunch time, Big Baby did instead.

Big Baby has played a lot of center this season and the C's are still first in the east.  Remember to add him to the center rotation.  He also does a solid job against Howard.

Jeff Green matches up better with Lamar Odom better than anyone on the C's besides KG.

Shaq is more of a matchup threat to the Lakers than Perk was.  Perk is much smaller than Bynum.

Dwight Howard killed Perk in their last matchup.

Doc will make Green play "the right way" like he did with Pierce.  His percentages will go up and his defense will improve in this system.  Rondo will get him easy shots on the break and in the half court.  This guy will see more open shots than he has in his career.

The C's will RUN and Tommy will love it!  With KG at the 5 and Green at the 4 this team will be one of the fastest in the league, even in their old age.

Or if they feel like it they can have Shaq, KG, Green, Pierce and Delonte and have a huge lineup.  So many matchup possibilities now.

If Jermaine O'Neal can play at an acceptable level in the play-offs, I think Boston needed to do this trade.

I didn't like their chances against Miami with a wing rotation of Paul Pierce/Ray Allen/Von Wafer/Delonte West. Regardless of the strong interior and help defense in the last reg. season win, I think that was fools gold. I also don't think guys like Butler or Parker would change anything significantly. Not with the kind of wings Boston will face.

I also didn't like that their best small-ball line-up was Pierce at the 4.

I believe Jeff Green is a very above average defender at the 3, especially versus the big wings Boston will face in the playoffs: LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Luol Deng, Hedo Turkoglu, maybe Durant.

I think Jermaine O'Neal is more important than Shaq. The other day I noticed in Synergy that Jermaine was one of the best post defenders in the NBA last season and spent quite some time looking at his clips. If he can play at that level this season, I don't think the Celtics interior defense got any worse. I'm slightly worried about the rebounding and, in fact, I'm a bit worried that the offense got worst because of O'Neal trying to do too much, unlike Perkins.

Problem with this theory is that JO is done, and his signing was the worst off-season acquisition of any contender.

Hard to believe anyone thinks that this team is more likely to win the title now than before the trade.

Funny cus i think it's hard to believe how many people think we're way worse off when we have 3 open roster spots and clearly there are moves to be made

You don't trade away a critical peace of your team when you have a shot to win a championship for the future.  Idc if we wouldn't have gotten anything back in return for Perk.

If we won a championship it would have been worth it.

Chances like this at a championship don't come around very often like this.
Really?  He traded two gius out with knee injuries and picked up two starters off the OKC team and top 10 protected first round pick.  I'll take that trade any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

Sorry I'm an idiot.  Love ya Perk wish you were still here, but knee injuries can't be trusted.

And to think I'd like to be a GM one day.  Danny teaches good lessons.

As the injuries mount up with Perk and Nate being out multiple weeks is there any doubt whatsoever anymore that Danny stole the show with this deal.

Could have: injured Perk, injured Nate, injured Daniels, injured Erden, healthy Haragody

or

Could have: healthy Jeff Green, healthy Nenad Krstic, healthy Troy Murphy, healthy Sasha Pavlovic, healthy Chris Johnson.

I'll take the latter group every single day of the week.

What Danny did was masterful.  I think he's got a very happy coach right now--even though Doc's March is suddenly more busy than it was.

We've done pretty well without Perk this year...

The goal is to get Shaq back healthy and hope for Jermaine to come back.  If they do, this team will be fine.  Everyone is acting like we just traded Wilt Chamberlain away...  ::)

I am not sure it is that bad. I think the reaction was like we traded Robert Parish and Todd Day for Scottie Pippen and Luc Longley (to throw out a 90's analogy).... Not a horrible deal at all.
The beatings will continue until morale improves
