1. LeBron
2. Dirk
3. CP3

I can't put Derrick Rose in the discussion because the Bulls are winning with defense, and he doesn't have all that much to do with it. Plus he's playing like a mini-LeBron right now (offensively at least, its ugly), that makes it hard for me to put him ahead of the full sized version (who's just better).

What do you mean he doesn't have much to do with it? Rose has been an excellent defender this year. Agreed on the second part though.
He's an solid defender, but he's not a difference maker defensively. He's actually targetting in the P&R many nights as the weakest defender that given night.

I can't say the guy is probably the third best PG in the league at best and he's the MVP. His offense is over rated because he doesn't create like CP3/Deron/Rondo. Instead he's a scoring PG.

Fair. I agree that if the consensus is that Paul is the best point guard in the league and then to give the MVP to Rose - odd to say the least.

I would, however, say that Rose is, to me, the definite number 2 for point guards in the NBA, ahead of Deron and definitely ahead of Rondo.

Dirk just called. He said he's glad you weren't a voter the year he won the MVP.

Most bad MVP awards are built on "suprising" first halfs of the season. Rose could very well walk away with it just like Dirk did.

I'm going Lebron because he is putting up the numbers on a team with 2 other "super stars".

Players are not supposed to put up those kinds of numbers while playing alongside other superstars.

Not only does Lebron have the numbers, but his Heat team are one of the best in the league.

Lebron's Heat also have a number of injuries, lack of a playoff tested head coach and lack of talent after their starting 5.

Big deal - those three make up almost 70% of the "numbers" on that flawed roster.

3 guys have been voted MVP three years in a row - back when MVP meant "best player":

Russell, Chamberlain, Bird.

LeBJ doesn't deserve a third in any way.

I wonder if the league will ever publish a definition of the award, to make it easier for the voters and fans to understand things like Nash winning 2 years straight...

Who's your MVP?

Because if you are just going by best player LBJ clearly stands out.

Derrick Rose.

Is it that farfetched to imagine Blake Griffin getting some votes? Baron Davis has been inconsistent at best, Eric's been out a while and the Rim Reaper has been completely invaluable to that team.

At this point I would approve of either Rose or Dirk in this (ridiculous) popularity contest that just lets the individual voters decide on what MVP means to them, and vote accordingly.

  • Rondo = Good
As a recent TrueHoop article noted, the MVP almost always goes to a player on one of the top 4 teams record wise, and the player is usually first or second in a couple of statistical categories.  The MVP is almost always a fairly prolific scorer, too.

Given those criteria, there's pretty much only one choice that makes sense....

LeBron.

Rose doesn't lead the league in any statistical category, and his team is most likely not going to finish with a top 4 record.  The Bulls are probably the 6th best team in the NBA.  Amare has no chance of winning because his Knicks will finish with fewer than 50 wins.  Dirk has a better chance, but I still think it's unlikely given the Mavs' inconsistency.

Honestly, LeBron deserves it.  The second most deserving player would be Wade, but because of LeBron that obviously isn't happening.  I would say Ginobili, since he really is the MVP for the best team in the league, but his numbers just aren't gaudy enough.

The Mavs were inconsistent because...?

Dirk was hurt.

That's a plus for him with the voters who's definition is "most valuable to his team".

If its so ridiculous, why is does it matter if LeBron gets it?

I mean you seem to want the award to be for the best player right? What do you think MVP should mean?

Obviously the award means a lot to players financially.

I'd be happy with any definition provided by the league with defined criteria, as opposed to the current situation where it's up to the voters to decide their own definition based on their own priorities/reasons...

So you don't have an opinion to what it should be? Do you have an opinon on who's the best player in the NBA?

What does the fact that it isn't rigourously defined bother you so much?

Best player in the NBA compared to most valuable player to his team aren't that different.

Key point. I can generally avoid getting dragged into discussions about who should be all-stars/MVPs because the criteria are so nebulous and esoteric.

Even though Lebron may deserve to get MVP I find it funny that he has pretty much the same record and numbers as he did with the Cav's last year considering he is on a team with "the greatest trio of all time"

Miami is going to have the same record or worse than the Cavs last year. He is basically doing the same thing he did last year but with better teammates. And before someone says how impressive it is to do with other all stars on your team, if he ends up losing more games with said all-stars than with his previous Cavs teams, how is that really impressive?
