Cuban also knows that Melo wants to sign the extension; in fact he's pretty desperate to do it, since the new CBA could take millions off what he'd get by signing the extension this year.  He just doesn't want to sign it with Denver.  It's exactly the sort of gamble Cuban would try to take, and it might work out as Denver starts to run out of time.

There's been a lot of talk the new CBA will modify existing contracts.  It only makes sense if the cap is reduced and there is a hard cap enforced.  First of all existing contracts alone would put some teams too close to the cap (don't know if there are any extremes where it would even exceed; maybe Heat?).  And secondly any teams with long term large contracts would be at a huge disadvantage for several years until they expired.  Because they signed player X to amount Y thinking that leaves them with amount Z left to spend.  Then if Z gets deduced they are screwed.

BTW Melo goes to NYK in the end; no question about it.

When the NJN were chasing him, he would not comment on them at all, and wouldn't meet them.  After the owner says we're out of the running, Melo publicly tells the press I would have spoken to them and it's the Nets fault for the breakdown not his.

He's playing every angle to not look like the bad buy and to land with the NYK.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban said that he would be willing to acquire an impending free agent of Carmelo Anthony's caliber without securing a contract extension.
Cuban isn't allowed to mention Anthony by name, but it was clear who he was talking about. The confident owner said that he would take on the challenge of convincing the rental player to stay. The Mavs remain a long shot to acquire Anthony, but the fact that they will trade for him without an extension could go a long way in the Nuggets' eyes. Adding Carmelo to their shaky small forward position would make the Mavs instant title contenders.

I would love to see this happen, so that maybe DAL can topple LAL. Would anyone with more trade machine savvy than I like to tackle this one?

Scary Dallas indeed
I dont think I want ANY tittle contendor getting better

I still think that Dallas is way too soft and Carmelo doesn't help them there.

They might be good enough to topple LA (which would be good), but I couldn't see them doing taking us to any more than 6 games (if it even went that far).

Cuban still acts like a 14-year-old playing fantasy basketball, bringing in big names with big stats but not actually taking into account how important defense is.

The Mavs are currently the 9th best defensive team in the league, they have a solid defensive team. Their problem is that their offense is entirely dependant on Dirk. Its also decent (11th in the league) but very predictable.

Bringing in Carmelo would greatly help them by giving them a true second scoring option. That would likely take them from fringe contender to a true title threat.
