Mavs owner Mark Cuban said that he would be willing to acquire an impending free agent of Carmelo Anthony's caliber without securing a contract extension.
Cuban isn't allowed to mention Anthony by name, but it was clear who he was talking about. The confident owner said that he would take on the challenge of convincing the rental player to stay. The Mavs remain a long shot to acquire Anthony, but the fact that they will trade for him without an extension could go a long way in the Nuggets' eyes. Adding Carmelo to their shaky small forward position would make the Mavs instant title contenders.

I would love to see this happen, so that maybe DAL can topple LAL. Would anyone with more trade machine savvy than I like to tackle this one?

How about:

DAL trades: Butler (expiring), Barea (expiring), Stevenson (expiring),  Rodrigue Beaubois, Dominique Jones, draft picks, cash

DEN trades: Carmelo, Al Harrington, Anthony Carter, Shelden Williams

Dallas gives up some young prospects in Beaubois and Jones, and takes back Harrington's cap killing deal

If you're a Denver fan, are you happy with the deal? I am sure the Mavs would make that deal right now.

If I'm a Denver fan, there isn't a deal that has been proposed that I'm happy with, especially if the Nets' offer is off the table.

This deal is in the same range as what NY is supposedly offering, though.  It also saves the team around $12 million this year ($6 million in salary, $6 million in luxury tax).

There shouldn't be a deal your happy with.  No matter what, you are trading the best player.  However, if they can either get a couple young assets, or get out from under a bad contract or two, it makes more sense then just letting Melo walk after the season.

I think that's ultimately where Anthony will end up.  But I doubt he'll sign there.

Cuban is a bigger gambler than any of the championship contenders.

And he should be.  Without Butler, he is clearly behind, but he has the chance to be right up there with the other contenders with a move like this.  They are in a team that are in a position to go all-in, so if the opportunity presents themselves, they should do it.  They would not be giving up anything that will set them back too far, and might be able to recoup some assets by sign and trading Melo if he won't resign.

This instantly makes Dallas my number 2 favorite team. Nowitzki and Melo on the same team along with Kidd and Terry. Even Chandler is entertaining this year. Im all for that, still dont think they could win a championship with that line up though. Spurs, Lakers, or Celtics hold the trophy whens all is said and done, theres noone that can beat those three teams in a best of 7 series.

I don't think Denver will be interested in an expiring contract + Beaubois offer.

I think they'll rate New York's offer higher (Gallo or Wilson + expiring contract + A.Randolph or first round pick + filler).

I'd love to see Carmelo end up in Dallas though. He'd make them the favourites to win the West.

Cuban also knows that Melo wants to sign the extension; in fact he's pretty desperate to do it, since the new CBA could take millions off what he'd get by signing the extension this year.  He just doesn't want to sign it with Denver.  It's exactly the sort of gamble Cuban would try to take, and it might work out as Denver starts to run out of time.

I think Carmelo Anthony would sign and extension with Dallas.

The lure of a Championship and the joy of playing alongside Dirk Nowitzki will be too much to turn down.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
Who is to say that Melo to the Mavs would even work, chemistry wise? Especially mid season--that's a pretty big gamble IMO. Maybe if they did it at the beginning of the season so they could assess their team and figure it out, kinda like what Miami had to do. But Miami's solution was almost simpler than Dallas' would be because Miami doesn't have to worry about getting the ball into more than 3 people's hands.

The problem with Chandler is that he's a restricted free agent after this season.  I don't think the Nuggets put a lot of value in him.  Also, I think the draft picks either team can offer are pretty similar.

The question, then, is which do you value more:

Gallinari (1 year before free agency)

or

Beaubois (2 years before free agency)
Dominique Jones (3 years before free agency)
+ Getting rid of Al Harrington ($12 million in immediate savings, plus much more over the long term)

Personally, I'd probably tend to go for the latter offer.  I suppose the Knicks could throw in Fields, too, which may give them a slight edge, but I think Dallas could be competitive with the Knicks.

I don't think the Knicks will include Fields.

The Nuggets are very high on Ty Lawson and feel he is already good enough to be a starting PG on several teams around the league + consider him their point guard of the future.

I don't think they rate Beaubois that much higher than Ty Lawson to pass up the opportunity to land a quality player at a position of need (Gallo or Wilson at SF).

If Caron Butler was healthy, I think Dallas would have the better offer but with his sole purpose as an expiring contract ... I just don't see Beaubois as a big enough incentive to get the deal done.
