Here are the rules governing these situations:

43. What if the team and their drafted player can't agree to a contract? What options does the player have? How long does the team keep his draft rights?

The player's options are limited. What happens depends on a number of factors:

    * If the player is already under contract to, or signs a contract with a non-NBA team, the team retains the player's draft rights for one year after the player's obligation to the non-NBA team ends. Essentially, the clock stops as long as the player plays pro ball outside the NBA. Players are not included in the team's team salary during the regular season while the player is under contract with a non-NBA team.
    * If the player goes on to play college ball after he was drafted, then the team retains the player's draft rights until one year following the draft the player would have entered had he not declared early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2005 and he returns to college and plays intercollegiate basketball, then they retain his draft rights until the 2008 draft. Note that the NCAA rules state that players lose their NCAA eligibility if they are drafted, so the player currently cannot return or go on to play college ball. This rule exists in the CBA in the event the NCAA rules ever change.
    * If the player was eligible to play in college before he was drafted but does not go on to play college basketball, then the team retains the player's draft rights until the draft the player would have entered had he not declared early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2005 and he does not return to college and play intercollegiate basketball, they retain his draft rights until the 2007 draft.
    * For all other players, the team retains the player's draft rights until the date of the next draft.

In any of the above cases, if the team does not sign the player in the allotted time, the player can enter the next draft. If the team that selects the player in the next draft doesn't sign him either, he becomes a rookie free agent.

When a team signs a first round draft pick within three years after he is drafted, they use the salary scale for the year in which he signs (usually the player signs in the same year he is drafted). After three years they have the option of either using the salary scale or signing him like he was a free agent -- using their cap room, the Mid-Level exception, the Bi-Annual exception or the Disabled Player exception, and with standard raises. They can only do the latter if the player did not play intercollegiately in the interim, and such a contract must be for at least three seasons.

Guys a joke!  You have a chance to play anywhere in the NBA you take it in a heartbeat. 

Why?  This kid has a ton of value, and no reason to rush it.  Players and agent control the NBA, and they can get players to where they want.  The kid is barely 20 years old, and he still has a lot of work to do before being much in the NBA.  It doesn't hurt him to wait it out another year or two (and make good money in Europe) and put the pressure on Minnesota to get something for him.

Anyways, I am sure his list is more flexible than those 3 teams, those are probably just ones he had recently mentioned.

As for being a career backup...not sure where you are getting that.  He will be looking to be a starter as soon as he can wherever he goes.

I think it was a joke since he listed Boston and he is not going to take the starting role from Rondo.

Could he be good?  Maybe. 



Is Rondo a top 5 PG in the NBA now?  Yes.

I do not make that trade.  Love and a prospect is not enough to trade Rondo.

But you know Love is a good NBA player and big men are far more valuable then little men.  Elite PG's don't win championships (except for Magic and Zeke and Cousy a long time ago).  Heck the only time a PG was even an all star in the year he won a title since Magic and Zeke was Tony Parker during the last Spurs title.  Payton, Stockton, and Rondo last year lost in the finals in an all star year, and Kidd did it twice since Magic and Zeke.  Winning NBA championships has almost nothing to do with elite PG play and much more to do with elite big man or wing play.

Love's poor defense in both a team and individual sense prevent him from being the sort of big man who impacts the game more than Rondo.

He gets your team a ton of extra possessions and is an efficient 3rd/4th option on offense, but that's not enough to give up Rondo for.

It's funny because I was just joking about the Rondo for Rubio/Love thing, but now that I think about it, it makes sense at least on some level.  

But regardless, my point was that Rondo is not locked in to this job.  Once the Big 3 are gone, Danny may need to get creative to rebuild this team, and part of that could involve moving Rondo, opening up the spot for Rubio.  

Obviously, it is way too premature to speculate on actual deals, but to rule out the possibility of Rondo being gone in a few years is also very premature IMO.

If I was a GM I would be put-off by the attitude. I have no problem if he wants to stay in Spain, but then he shouldn't enter the draft.

A top player creates his own career, Griffin doing it now .. and when C's drafted PP34 he clearly didn't want to come here , and look how that turned out

Good, but not an elite big man. 


Love is not good enough to trade Rondo for.  Fringe all-star that is getting a stat boost being on a terrible team.  Just like David Lee on NY.    He put up similar numbers to Love on a bad team.  When he gets replaced by an elite big man (Amare) the team is now over 500.
