I'll also add that despite many complaints about the dumbing down of society, the average American IQ has risen with every generation, largely due to better nutrition and education.  Look into the Flynn effect if you're interested in learning more.

But all the generational comparisons are generally misled.  People who say the current batch of young people are rude, self-centered, indicative of the decline of society...when those same people were young, millions of adults said the exact same things about them.  When the current youth grow up, many of them will say the exact same things about the next batch.  And you can see older adults making these same complaints stretching back as long as civilizations have existed.  Like Twain said, history doesn't repeat but it sure does rhyme.

The flip side of this is that if today's young people had been raised in a more racist and intolerant culture, like many of their grandparents and great-grandparents were, they'd be more racist and intolerant too.  Genetically there's basically no difference from one generation to the next.  The circumstances each group finds themselves in, and how they react to them, are the only real differences.

And stop all this crap about how "people are becoming worse"

The world we live in is 1000 times more tolerant than it was 50-60 years ago.

That's the stupidest thing i've ever heard.

Bunch of crabby old guys that think thier generation was the best, give me a break! I mean jeez some of the stuff that comes out your you old people's mouths is ridiculous.

I guarantee you take a room full of 60-70 year old guys and a room full of 15-25 year old kids and the old guys are going to be way more racist and ignorant than the kids...
I have a question for you.  I don't know what race/culture you are and it is irrelevant anyway, but I would like to know how many people of a different race/culture you have...not just co-workers or acquaintances, but actual friends?

ok, if you must know, i'm white. and let's see I have 2 mexican sister in laws, 4 mexican nieces/nephews, I have an adopted sister who is black who has a half italian, half black son, whom I love very much. I grew up in Boston and I had plenty of black, puerto rican and asian friends. I live in california now, my best friend is a mexican kid named juan, my other really good friend out here is half mexican half white kid named daniel. I've had plenty of people in my life that I care about, and that care about me whom are of a different race.

For the record I would never interrupt a moment of silence, even if it was five minutes long. I'm just not going to judge or chastize an entire generation of people because of the actions of 1 person.

This guy who is saying our generation is full of nothing but self-centered narcissits is just plain ridiculous. He is sitting there labeling an entire generation of people he has never met as self-centered. His views are so incredibly biggoted it blows my mind that more people aren't calling him out on it.

You might as well be a racist man, because you're talking about millions of people that you've never met and assuming you know everything about them and that you are better than them. Thats exactly what MLK was fighting against.

Cant wait until your generation is completely off the face of this planet, just wait and see how much better the world is in 60 years when OUR kids are running things.

i'm so glad you submitted your qualifications, so we can judge if you are a racist or not - you do seem to have a good mix of races included in your group of relatives and friends. how about gays and lesbians, now, you didn't mention anyone of that ilk in your list. also not sure i saw any asians in there.

so even though you may think you qualify as a beautiful human being, it's obvious that you have some work to do.

Heck, I named my second son after a black guy, and I tried to name my third son Asante Samuel [insert last name] but my wife made me pick something else :P

I'm trying to raise my kids not to even see the difference in people based on skin color. When they watch celtics games they say "Daddy, i'm paul pierce, look I can dunk" or "Daddy, I look like rondo, i'm fast!"

They have no clue that they are any different from anyone else, my 4 yr old is the only white  kid in his class and he has tons of friends. One day when they are old enough I will explain to them all of the horrible things that have happened because of racism and things of that nature, and I know they are going to be incredibly upset when they find out that there are people out there that hate thier friends just because of the color of thier skin, they will be even more progressive than our generation has about bridging the gap between races in this country.

ok pal, why dont you talk to your noble buddy that asked me in the first place. I'm not allowed to respond to a question because it involves race now? Grow up.

The Point I was trying to make minus the date gafs.

Ok, but it's worth pointing out that the country has been becoming less racist and more tolerant as time goes by. It's not like his generation was more racist than his parent's generation, and it's not like your generation introduced tolerance to society.

It is not about "tolerance", it is the lack of respect and caring about anyone or anything else but yourself. That is what I see today. I have never seen a more self-entitled, self-absorbed, narcissistic generation.

It's a shame that you feel that way.  If you gave some young people a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Here's hoping it's not too late for you to change your mind.

I owned and ran a business for 10 years. I interviewed hundreds of job candidates -- the self-entitlement and narcissism of so many of the applicants was unreal. Technology has changed everything. The ability to get your 15 minutes of fame on the internet seems to drive so many in the younger/current generation. I am not saying there are not plenty of younger men and women who respect and care about others, but it is my opinion that the majority do not.

So while the average IQ may have risen, the United States now stands 31st in the world in terms of its students' math abilities, and something like 16th in terms of reading. Go figure.

Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but your basis for judging the majority of the membersof an entire generation based on your own personal encounters seems pretty flimsy to me.

Your first point is well taken.

Your more civilized and educated point....I...don't know.

I'm not sure the exact stats but if the the current generation has the highest divorce rates, homicide, suicide, incarceration, crimes against children yadda yadda then I might disagree with you.

This is sorta philosophical too.

The kids of the greatest generation didn't have to get metal detected on the way into school and didn't practice what to do in case another kid came into the building to shoot them the way kids do now.

On the other hand they did practice what to do in a nuclear attack.

Hard to say which is more civilized.

I do sort of agree with the mayor of Philly last week saying we're soft.

Case in point. In the old uncivilized and uneducated days a guy commits murder. They fry him.

Nowadays they let him out on parole and he kills again like last week in MA.  Which group of people acted more civilized and more educated?  The ones  that fried him or the ones that let him out?

I'm not sure these questions have great answers

WOW  ???
Im really sorry that that occurred during your first game experience.  My first game was so great and memorable i would only hope that everyone else would have something similar.

It is crazy how disrespectful and rude some people can be.  This is another reason where sporting events have been taken down a notch. I understand games are exciting and passionate fans make it fun, but there is a certain level of decor that I believe all fans should follow.
