The Pacers do not want him back.

That's cool because I certainly don't want a broken down Posey back either.

The man got paid...he hasn't broken down. I think he can still be a tremendous asset for the C's this post-season (if he gets in shape in time - a risk I'd be more than willing to take).

He wants to do what they have been doing in the NFL for years.

How many guys have we seen in the NFL return to the team they spent so many years with with a one day contract to just retire?

Baseball too.  Nomar did it just last year.

Slight difference in legacy between Nomar and Jermaine....

Just slight.
uhhhh...one was a quitter and the other got hurt?

Plus it actually started in Portland. Not Indy.  Yeah. I know.

Thinking about this again...Posey/JO works, and saves the Pacers some bucks as they try to bring in a free agent...

I'd say Bird does it to save money, and Danny does it to get a player who is available to play at a position of relative need, while looking like he's giving JO something he's okay with.

Worth some thought.

Also somewhat humorous that we're never too far away from a "bring back Posey" thread...

If JO is to retire a Pacer, we better trade him soon.

You're missing one point though, both contracts expire at the same time.

So, this only works assuming JO is not going to play again, plans on retiring, and agrees to forgo any buyout, OR the Celtics agree to facilitate any buyout. Otherwise, it doesn't save the Pacers any money at all. And the buyout still counts against their cap for next year.

So if you look at it for Indiana, why would they take on JOs contract, when they could just sign him to a 10-day contract in the 2013 season, and have him officially file retirement then; if there really is any truth to this talk about him wanting to retire there.

Bottom line is, Posey is a more useful player right now for the simple fact that he can ya know... play. So the Pacers gain nothing by this.

Posey makes about $1.4 million more than JO (due to the 20% raises since he signed his MLE deal).  That's an immediate savings for Indy, this year and next, and might be enough to make a little bit of a difference in their FA plans.  Surely Posey isn't helping them, and JO isn't helping us...

Not a huge deal, but perhaps one of those little ones that can and might actually happen (unlike, say, a Harangody for Granger trade).

And as a practical matter, Posey is the sort of player that's really only valuable to a contender, which Indy isn't, and none of the other contenders seem to have spare parts to swap for him.  This might be Bird's only real shot at reducing that part of the payroll without giving up some other asset.

Once Perk is back, or it's clear that JO won't be helping us in the playoffs this year, I'd be interested in a Posey for JO swap (and if the financials really do work in the Pacer's favor, it's at least possible).

That said, I think Posey is pretty limited these days - he might not be much more helpful than Michael Finley was.  Still, that's better than a player who spends all his time in street-clothes.

JO isnt talking about leaving now. After his contract expires he will try to sign a minimum contract with the Pacers just to end his career in the city where it was all started. I think its a respectable gesture and something that would be good for him and the NBA. i dont have a problem with it.

I think a player who during his tenure with the Pacers sprinted across the court and coldcocked a fan during one of the most disgraceful events in sports history, sued the league to reduce his suspension, Showed a history of playing when he felt like it, and made a fool of himself when calling the NBA dress code racist.  Hardly deserves a respectful gesture.

I'd obviously be on board to trade him to fulfill his fantasy.

I happen to agree that the NBA dress code was racist, and feel that JO pointing it out may have been one of his finest moments.

Truly, I don't think Posey has fallen off that much.  He's never been one of those role players that can act like a star in a pinch, and still can't, but he is a pretty good complementary player.  He might not have the quicks to defend 2's any more, but Quisy is better there than the 3.  His reach hasn't shrunk...

He'd be valuable against Lebron, Josh Smith, Deng, and Artest, along with G.Wallace, Granger, etc...you know, the SF's that are too big for Quisy.

With trade kickers factored in, Indy would save about a million bucks/year.  That's a decent incentive, but perhaps a 2nd rounder or Wyc's cash might be worth throwing in.

Posey will have an impact for us. JO has been sitting in dress clothes for quite sometime now

I would trade JO the bum for almost anyone. If we could get Indiana to take him off our hands, I would do it (doubt it happens). Posey isn't much at this point, but he would help the team more than JO the bum.
