another offensive lineman.  Could be a steal if healthy, though.
And by healthy we mean lose 30lbs

No, he means beat cancer.
The guy was generally thought to be first - second round talent, but will undergo chemotherapy for the next couple months.

Yep, third 1st-round talent, jumbo-sized offensive player that Bill's picked.  Their O could tower over the league in a couple of years.

what makes this guy a first round talent exactly?
I am not saying I know whether or not this guys is good but according to CBS Sports:

Quote
Cannon's weight gives some potential investors pause, but he has been durable and has the frame and game to warrant a first-round pick if a team gives him a year to grow within the structure of an NFL offense.

ranked 7 out of 87 offensive tackles (12 on espn).  he was projected to go in the second round until th health thing jumped up.  this from the espn blog:  "In selecting TCU offensive lineman Marcus Cannon with their initial fifth-round pick (138th overall), the Patriots get a player with early-round skills but who fell in the draft because of medical concerns."

still would like to see a de in this round.  one thing people are talking about is free agency.  bill may have a free agent pass rusher in mind (i don't know who's available).

Pats next pick coming up soon.
It would be nice to see a DE or OLB type.  Just to add a bit of insurance to that position.

The extra points blog on boston.com has an interesting take on BB's draft strategy this year -- that BB is basically drafting for positions where they might lose players to FA (certainly makes sense in the case of Solder and the two RBs, but I don't really buy it in the other cases).

You're kidding me. They litteraly picked a cancer? And I told you they'd draft a worthless TE.

I'm predicting in order

A QB

A punter

Another RB

Another DB

something like that

Ha!
I bet instead we select a couple of TEs, and NT.

Well, that's one TE.
One more to go, then the NT, and we'll call it a day.

He has Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  It's the same thing Jon Lester had.  He has 3 more dates of chemo left and then I'm assuming he'll be okay to start working out.  Not sure if he'll be ready for the start of the season, but hey the league may not even be ready.  I actually really like this pick.
do it

Assuming he comes back I like it too. A highly athletic 350 pounder who can't be bull rushed should make a heck of a guard. And maybe chemo will help him lose about 25lbs

Yeah, on the bubble as a first/second rounder.  Not just big but also very athletic and nimble for his size.

The Patriots have not addressed the issues on defense as of yet and won't get anyone that can really make an impact. We now have 4 RB's and 4 TE's and mostly offense was looked at for some odd reason.

They got some good players so if you grade it so far on that then they did very well but if you grade it on the impact these guys will have then you have to give them a C or a D. Mallett, Smith, Cannon most likely won't play. Ridley and/or Verneen won't see a whole lot of time and that leaves you with Solder and Dowling. Solder will be a back up most likely and Dowling might, might be a nickel corner cause I think he'll be behind Butler on the depth chart.

This was potentially a great draft for the future, future being 2-3 years from now but was completely horrible for now, so far. 25th ranked defense and our coach is apparently a defense minded coach... I would argue that he is an offensive minded coach now. We'll see who they can get in the 6th or 7th round but I do think it should be defense but with the way things are going they will draft a WR and a new cheerleader.

I'll say this to add. I agree with Reiss (espnboston guy) when he wrote that when they chose Dowling they really thought that Brooks Reed or that other guy would still be on the board when they picked next and then they were drafted shortly after that. I think the same happened when they traded back from 28 and thought Heyward or Wilkerson would be still available at 33 and weren't. I think he gambled and lost twice.

This is usually the part of the draft where BB throws us a bone and drafts mediocre players at positions of need and on ends up on IR and the other plays better than expected

First it was Pryor and Richards, then it was Weston and Deadrick. Looking forward to the nobodys this year

You mean a guy who has a good rookie year, then gets lost in the shuffle? So am I. Especially if it's a position of need.  I guess I need to start looking forward to the next Danny Woodhead if i want talent on this team, because unless it's a TE it seems not to come through the draft
