  You'd have to go back to Larry to see someone else capable of that pass. No look, mid-air, over the shoulder with his left hand and he hits a player 20+ feet away with a perfectly weighted chest-high pass about 6 inches off of dead center.

  No lie, I saw a few minutes of sportscenter. The Heat were on a break, LeBron had the ball with Wade ahead of him on one side and another player ahead of him on the other. Two defenders back (3v2 break). LeBron throws a simple pass to a wide open Wade and the announcers are gushing. "He's passing like Magic!!!". Sigh.

I knew Rondo was special the first time I saw him play in summer league.  I think having that all seeing basketball IQ is god given.  He has shown signs since the beginning. 

I recall arguing on the Celtic boards, Redwasright was my moniker then when he was a rookie.  But I have had several names as I forget passwords or change emails and can't them back etc, that he ought to be starting ahead of Telfairy.  This kid has the basketball IQ, he'd be an all time great if he had a jumpshot and foul shooting ability.

The reason why that assist was special is not because it was left handed, or over the shoulder, or no-look. I would bet in a vacuum, 90% of wings and guards could make that pass.

The reason why it was special is that Rondo:

1) Was following a play to get HIM a layup, which he performed perfectly.

2) Was able to see where Ray Allen was while he entered the paint, and keep that spacial position in his mind

3) Know the positions and assignments of the 3 (THREE!) defenders that closed in on him when it became clear the play was a give and go

4) Knew how long to wait to make sure Affalo was so committed that he could not possibly close out in time on Ray Allen

5) Was able to walk away as cool as Shaft from an exploding bad-guy hideout while the ball swished through.

  I'd be surprised if more than 80% of the typical passes you see in the nba are right on the money and at the right speed. Most of that 90% would have to practice for quite a while before they could come close to that. Don't some of the point guards in the skills contest have trouble throwing a chest pass through a target?

Well if you look, the pass was a hop-step to Ray's left (as opposed to our left of Ray). Ray's just a pro, and the ball was soft enough so it didn't matter.

EDIT: But your point about PG's having a hard time in the skills comp is a valid one. Deron Williams, Kidd, I've seen them all struggle, with the exception of Steve Nash.

He threw it where the receiver could get it and then make a play on the ball... like Tom Brady would. It was total package assist - most players force the shot.

  People sometimes complain that Rondo tries the flashy pass when a simpler pass might work. What they miss is that he generally masters that flashy pass and adds it to his arsenal with good results. An example of this is last year's full-speed behind the back bounce pass (with either hand) during fast breaks.
