Is that the same jumpshot he needs to develop to become a decent starter in the nba, or even be considered for an all-star spot? Just curious.

It's the jumpshot that cost him a roster spot on the USA "B" team.  He may not even get invited to an A team tryout.

Hardly relavent, considering the fact that the USA team didn't run much of an offense and had little to no ball movement. LeBron and Wade won't both be MVP candidates on the same team. What does that prove?

Don't get me wrong; I'm a Rondo fan.  But being a fan of his is one thing; thinking he is one of the best players in the league is another.  I've said it many times and I'll say it again, Rondo would not be a star at this stage of his career if he didn't play for a stacked team.

You can say it all you want but that doesn't make it true. When players like PP and KG are out of the lineup and playing hurt Rondo puts up better numbers, not worse. The truth of the matter is that players like Ray and KG benefit at least as much from playing with Rondo as he does playing with them, probably more.

If the game was on the line and he played with poor offensive players around him, he would not be effective at winning the game for you; that's the difference between elite and being a good player.  Look at the Bucks game last night; left him wide open for the last shot and he couldn't make it.  It's just one shot, but he clearly is not comfortable in taking it.

How many players do you think you can put on a team with bad players and have them be effective? Clearly you don't think that Dwight Howard is elite, only players that excel at creating their own shot.

Rondo made a lot of big plays on both ends of the court with the game on the line against the Bucks. There is, believe it or not, a lot more to the game than scoring.

BBallTim - I'm not disputing the fact that Rondo makes a lot of contributions for this team.  But the topic of this thread is Rondo for NBA MVP.  That award is voted on nationally.  On a national level Rondo does not enjoy anywhere near the level of praise he receives in Boston.  Take a national poll of best PG's in the league and Rondo is going to fall behind Paul, Deron for sure, and somewhere in the mix with Westbrook, Nash, Parker, Rose.

Unless he shatters the APG record, he has almost no chance of winning the award.  KD was practically given the award before the season started.  It's really his to lose, and the only way that happens if he gets injured or his team bombs and misses the playoffs.

Also look at the list of past winners; it's all scorers.  That's how the voting goes for this award.  The closest compraision may be when Nash won back to backs, but again Nash was a go to offense force at the end of games those years.  Rondo is not the C's go to guy for game winners.

  • Rondo = Good
Rondo isn't going to average 15 assists per game.

He may lead the league in assists, and possibly in steals, too.  But he won't win MVP.

He would need to develop a reliable jumpshot overnight and start scoring over 15 points a game while bringing in more than 5 rebounds a game.

It just isn't going to happen.  Rondo isn't the type of player who will win MVPs anyway.  Maybe someday he'll win Finals MVP.

Is that the same jumpshot he needs to develop to become a decent starter in the nba, or even be considered for an all-star spot? Just curious.

Are you implying that I said Rondo couldn't be a decent starter or an All-Star without a consistent jumpshot?  Because I definitely never said that.

What I would say, however, is that in order to be an MVP, you need to be able to carry your team on offense - at least for stretches of the game.  It's not possible to do that at the PG position unless you have a jumpshot effective enough to keep opposing defenses honest from mid and long range - or you need to be a total athletic freak with a crazy crossover like Derrick Rose.  Rondo doesn't have a really reliable jumpshot, and fast and athletic as he is, he's not Derrick Rose (or Russell Westbrook).

In any case, it's obviously very difficult for a PG to win MVP anyway, considering that in the last 20 years the only guys who have done it are Steve Nash (great passer and possibly the greatest pure shooter ever) and Magic Johnson (capable of playing all 5 positions, scoring a ton, rebounding a ton, and passing a ton...he was Magic Johnson; nuff said).

I think the only PG in the league with the all-around package for winning MVP at the moment is Chris Paul.  He does everything, and he's been a dominant player in the league long enough to get recognition from voters (which is important).
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

Right now Rajon's odds to win MVP are not very good. http://www.laywagersports.com/2010-2011-nba-regular-season-mvp-odds/

The only thing that matters to me is that Rajon Rondo is the best point guard for this team. If I was selecting the MVP today it would be Rose. But, individual honors have never mattered to the Celtics, which is the best thing about this team.

Rondo wont win the MVP for the simple fact that without him, C's would still be in the top 4 in the east.

Without Rose the bulls wouldnt make the playoffs = MVP.

He deserves it this year, he has to carry those guys hardcore every game. That is one hell of a tough job.

I am pretty sure Durant is going to win.

Rose is going to have to wait.

If you compare the whole Bulls roster to the OKC roster, the Bulls have way more many quality pieces than the Thunder.

Many people didn't even consider Durant the MVP of his own team for much of the year. I don't see any way he wins it...it's a three-way race between Rose/Lebron/Dwight imo.

The talent gap between Westbrook and Durant is slim. Both of them are great and young. Westbrook is incredible. They are basically LeBron and Wade of the west.

This years MVP is non conventional.

Usually the MVP goes to the best player on the #1 seed in the conference. This year the Celtics are #1 but dont have anyone that puts up huge scoring stats, so thats out of the question.

Heat have looked terrible and are full of stars, so that might negate LeBron from winning.

Rose is the only logical choice in the east even though his team isnt the best in the conference. Hes putting up godly stats, plus his team wouldnt even make the playoffs without him.

Rose is the default MVP in my opinion, he deserves it the most.

13th or 14th for an award that generally goes to better scorers isn't bad, especially considering that he missed some time and was struggling with foot/leg injuries for a while.
