How about Luke for ROY?  His shooting percentage is 100% in limited minutes...  :D

Hate to bash Rondo but I have a difficult time accepting someone as MVP when you really don't have to guard him unless he has the ball. I know we sort of blew it against LA but he was a big reason why we lost the series. Kobe could do whatever he wanted on defense, paying almost no attention to Rondo. He's definitely one of the top PGs but I don't think MVP's should have many flaws or negatives in their game and he has a few too many.

Nash's MVP seasons were VERY weak, and really shouldn't set a precedent for what a PG needs to do to win MVP since

a. Chris Paul has had better PG seasons offensively than either of Nash's years, and
b. Paul did so while also playing more minutes and way way better defense (as in good defense rather than well below average defense).

Unfortunately, Nash's sentiment and media driven MVPs have kind of skewed what it seems like a PG needs to do to be in the MVP discussion.

Rondo has been playing really really well, and is averaging 11.6 points, 16.4 assists, 2.6 steals, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 turnovers. So to be in the discussion, he is going to need to basically keep his steals, assists, and rebounds where they are AND increase his scoring up to about 15.o at least while decreasing the TOs...which is a huge jump considering he is already playing the best he's ever played. That, or he's going to have to get his scoring up to 18 or so and keep his assists at 13 or so all while maintaining all-defense recognition. Hard to see that happening this year, unfortunately.

For example, the following was NOT an MVP season by a PG:
21.1 pts, 4.0 rbs, 11.6 assists, 2.5 TO's, 2.7 steals, .488 FG, .369 3p, .851 FT.; 56 wins

That was beaten out by an SG with
28.3 pts, 6.3 rbs, 5.4 assists, 3.1 TO's, 1.8 steals, .459 FG, .361 3p, .840 FT.; 57 wins (w/ better teammates)

Point being, Unless you can garner the media blind devotion that Nash does, a PG will rarely beat the SG/SF type unless it's ridiculously phenomenal.

This is not a popular position on this Board but I agree with it.  There is a very important non-statistical negative impact that Rondo has because is can't shoot and doesn't need to be covered closely.

He is sooo close though to being that type of player (like Nash) who is going to be is going to be in anyone's MVP discussion.  Until a consistent shot comes though, I personally don't think he is at the league or even team MVP level

I disagree on the team MVP front. Without Rondo offensively this team would be below average, he's our best creator even without a jump shot.

Putting a replacement level average PG (Nate Robinson) in for him and the offense sputters badly.

I agree that Rondo is good (and I love him as a player) but I think we would be better off (or maybe less worse off is the way to say it) for example if West replaced Rondo than if Davis replaced Garnett or Daniels replaced Pierce.

We probably need everyone to win a title, Rondo is important, but I don't feel most important.

So you people would still be down on Rondo if he kept up his 48% from the field?

Which is lower than his past two seasons

It's probably as much about the Celtics' record and health as it is about his numbers.

If one of the Big 3 goes down for 20 games, and we go 15-5 during that stretch with him leading the way, on the way to a 60+ win season, he'd have a pretty good case. I certainly don't hope for such an injury, but I think that Rondo would almost need something like that to give him separation as the leader of the team.

The Lakers defense only worked because Ray missed 24 of his last 28 three pointers. If he'd have hit them at close to the same clip after Artest kneed him that he was for the rest of the playoffs we'd probably have won games 4 and 7 (if the series had gone that far.

I am not against Rajon, as a matter of fact I think he is the most important player on the Boston Celtics...even over the certain Hall of Famers who are on the team.  I just know that it is a long season and those who vote on these things sometimes do not see things my way.  I would still be happy with Rondo, and would not trade him for Anyone, even if he never attempted another shot.  I personally feel that the way he runs the team on the floor more than makes up for his hesitation to score, himself.  If he continues as he is, though, his name will at least be in the discussion.

pretty sure if they gave out MVP's after 4-5 games... Chris Paul would be more likely than Rondo.

I'd say that vote would be a lot closer than you think.

Highly unlikely.  He would need at least 20 and 14 to have a chance.  People are saying his defense is better than Nash's was, but they don't actually care about that for MVP.  Plus Nash was a 50/40/90 guy.  Rondo will come no where close to the 40 or the 90.

Despite Rondo probably being in the top 10 for most valuable players in the league, I'm afraid he won't even be close to the actual MVP talks.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I'm fine with that, makes him much easier to keep.
